Oscar Piastri retires from Hungarian GP after gearbox failure

sportsJul 26, 202619243

Oscar Piastri retired from the Hungarian Grand Prix on lap 56 when his McLaren suffered a gearbox failure, ending what RacingNews365 called a "horror" mid-race for the Australian. Piastri had taken the lead early after Lando Norris ran wide at turn three and McLaren pitted him first, but he rejoined in traffic and collided with Carlos Sainz while attempting to lap the Spaniard. The contact cost Piastri several seconds and allowed Norris to pit and inherit the lead. Frustrated on team radio after the incident, Piastri angrily told a driver to "get out of the way." Piastri’s gearbox failure on lap 56 brought out a virtual safety car that let Norris and Lewis Hamilton pit. The retirement left Piastri’s strong start to the race undone and removed him from contention on a day McLaren briefly looked competitive.
