The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's new epic
Hollywood Reporter projects the box office opening weekend of The Odyssey at $257 million globally.
We all know he has no taste, just look at the CyberTruck.
I saw the Odyssey on Friday. I don't understand what is woke about it. Is it because they cast a black actress to play Helen of Troy? Is that it?
As if Elon Musk ever read Homer...
Noted classics scholar Elon Musk. I would be willing to bet any amount of money that Elon has never cracked the spine on a copy of the Odyssey. The idea of the pearlescent bastard calling anyone else on earth a worm.
The Classical Greeks would have considered Elmo to be a barbarian.
Someone should fix Leon's logo with one of his rockets blowing up. That's worth more than 257 million I would think
Imagine being the richest man in the world but you spend your time being mad about a movie that no one is forcing you to watch.
Elon is big mad because this generation's best director cast brown people in roles for a story that takes place in the near east, southeastern Europe and north Africa. Elon is a profoundly broken human whose racism overrides even the most common sense
No one should listen to that barrel chest kissing cousin produced bologna smelling bitch anyways.
The Odyssey isn’t about Northern Europeans. It’s a Greek epic set in a Mediterranean world, where Greece, Egypt, North Africa, & Asia Minor were all part of the same interconnected region. Yelling about the “historical accuracy” of a story filled with gods and mythical creatures is next-level stupid
"Any Shakespeare play or movie adaptation that doesn't have all its female characters played by men dressed as women desecrates the Bard just to meet the woke rules." (Also--I'd bet a fair amount that Elon has never read the Odyssey or the Iliad.)
Musk spent $56B to acquire Twitter in order to be able to shift the national cultural narrative towards his preferred worldview, and within three years, turned the largest social media company in the world into a spent force.
What is so strange about this "argument" is he won a bunch of Oscars two years ago
So much for MAGA trying to "gO wOkE gO bRoKe" The Odyssey 🤣🤣🤣
Based on current trends, probably close to $0 box office by the end of July.
The Odyssey is pulling $260 million this weekend, well on its way to becoming the biggest movie of the year. It has a 95%/97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Everyone loves it. Please enjoy this exchange.
It’s very funny that Elon Musk of all people is complaining about manipulating public opinion to boost the financial value of a dodgy product
This will morph into: Imagine how much money they would have made if they had allowed influencer screenings. The thread of grievance will never be broken. It just goes on.
Setting aside the obvious for a moment… Can we also note how sad it is that we have actual “movie influencers?”
You just wait! Musk will prove his humility and humanity by admitting... Never mind.
It’s so wild that the richest man is the nastiest, pettiest, most divorced unhappiest guy I can think of. His kids hate him. He hasn’t created one single public good. He killed millions for fun and profit
aw. did he opt to invite people who might actually be movie critics and didn't invite online trolls? imagine that. great example of how to manage the release.
Hallo media die denken dat X de echte wereld is en dat daar de agenda wordt bepaald.
Prosperity is ahead for Argentina
Nothing like having people who have studied film review a movie instead of just a bunch of pretty people who are good at marketing themselves. Next you're going to tell me we should be doing something similar for science or the military or diplomacy.
When reality is proving you’re an absolute pack of dorks and losers, just retreat to the imaginary world of X and bask in the Hitler particles and pretend that it’s just the LaMeStReAm MeDiA LiEs.
there could be no greater advertisement, than who hates it
I know two 69-y.o.s who pulled nearly $50 from their hard-earned retirement fund in order to go see this at a nearby IMAX theater. I know them personally. For the record, the last time I was in an IMAX theater was at Cape Canaveral in the early 1990's. #TheOdyssey
One interesting thing about this controversy is that there's nothing stopping all these whiners from making their own adaptation of The Odyssey. (thread)
Elon Musk could cut a check right now for a big budget adaptation produced exactly to his liking. He could hire the director and writer and crew he wants. He could cast whomever he wants. He could easily bankroll a film that's faithful to his aesthetics and woeful understanding of literature.
Isn't The Odyssey one of the most adapted works in history?
And yet they are totally cool with white Jesus.
18 and I were talking about the feigned outrage, and I said: "2 options: don't see it or make your own movie." He replied: "Ya... I don't get it. It's a movie, and every movie takes the directors vision of things."
When I was involved in Orange County Republican youth activism I avidly read James Burnham, Frank Meyer, Whittaker Chambers. This radical branch of American conservatism, filled with ex-Trotskyists, have been complaining about “the left’s hold on culture” since late 1940s. They’re still complaining.
Because none of them actually have friends. This is as close as they can get.
It’s so funny that conservatives hated The Odyssey because a Black woman and trans man were cast in it cause it’s kinda made for them. Focus on traditional masculinity, civilization falling because of men’s moral failings, excellent foreigners, women as vengeful, liars, witches and wives.
Technically amazing movie, but boy does Nolan’s fear of anarchism show the most here. Not only that, while I love seeing Elliot cast as a cis man warrior, it feels a tad… let’s say bioessentially stereotypical that he plays the innocent young boy who dies pure and must be avenged.
After having seen it twice, I realize it’s basically about Matt Damon leaving his wife Anne Hathaway to go on a business trip where he ends up having an affair with Charlize Thereon.
It reminds me of how conservatives completely ignored Egger's The Northman even though it’s the Viking fantasy they all long for and is an excellent, wonderful movie. Conclusion: Conservatives don’t like good movies, they prefer trash like Citizen Vigilante 🤮
Getting mad that a mythical character, an egg hatched result of the union between princess and swan, isn't played by a white person, seems a cry for help.
I hate when they do this with directors I don't like, because I also don't wanna get into why I don't like Nolan, but I have to or I look like some conservative asshole. I fundamentally disagree with his philosophy of filmmaking! But I also want you to go like what you like!
That movie was filmed in Western Sahara, in territories stolen by Morocco from the saharawi population. It's a legitimation of colonialism and forced displacement of colonized populations.
Its why I laugh everytime someone is like make stuff more for them! They hate everything! You cant make art for fash because they’ll ways come around to calling it degenerate.
Digging into themes and concepts takes too long for the outrage cycle. Screaming about casting is something they can do immediately without having to see the movie or have any media literacy.
Just saw The Odyssey. It was super disappointing. Most of the actors were white dudes and it ended up being a normie, hetero love story. I was told it was Woke Propaganda, but turns out it’s just an ancient classic of western civilization.
All joking aside, it rocked and was incredibly fun to see in theaters. I am curious about whether the theme Nolan landed on is entirely anachronistic, or if there is a textual basis for his interpretation (which I enjoyed). It’s certainly very different than what I remembered from college.
I wonder if that was the marketing angle. The paid people on social media to say it was woke just to get you to the theater.
Yeah. A bunch Yankee accents. Couldn’t even make their voices sound halfway Greek. Was Nia Vardolos not available?
Barely even that. Beautifully filmed but disappointing script, terrible casting (aside from Lupita who was totally fine), and lame reliance on flashbacks.
bad dialogue writing. bad acting by many principle... from flat to outright bad. Sound was excessively loud (ear damage loud). Music was brilliant.
directed by a union leader!
Oppenheimer and The Odyssey are movies about men feeling guilt and shame over their life's crowning achievement bringing untold suffering into the world clearly this is an expression of Christopher Nolan's guilt for popularizing superhero movies with The Dark Knight
Someone argued that Oppenheimer is an allegory in which Oppenheimer is Nolan and the bomb is The Dark Knight and the end of the world is the end of cinema.
Nolan watching Bvs dawn of justice:
I think like Tobey Spiderman was the beginning of the modern superhero pox
Good sir, I think you found the only reasonable take that could make one not want to see the Odyssey.
‘The Odyssey’ debuts with $264.1M at the global box office 💰 • The biggest opening ever for a Christopher Nolan film • Production budget was $250M
Hollywood is going to take the wrong lesson from this and we're going to get a decade of awful sword and sandal movies.
I’m gonna wait and watch it as god intended
"People" are shocked this did well like certain other "people" will be shocked another movie will do insanely well in December. Stay tuned.
As someone working at a cinema, thank you Nolan. Also, *cries in customer service*
Y'all remember when people kept saying that this movie was going to bomb because of the "DEI casting"? Those were fun times, huh?
Christopher Nolan has fulfilled his dream of shooting a feature film entirely on IMAX film with "The Odyssey."
I’ll be watching it on iPhone 5
It always strikes me as funny anytime Nolan, and other filmmakers, promote IMAX as saving movie theaters. The true appeal of movie theaters is supposed to be about accessibility (sharing a dream together), but how many rural towns do you know of that carry IMAX theaters?
It’s kind of fascinating seeing Twitter go into full When Prophecy Fails mode over The Odyssey being such a smash success with both critics and the box office. The full spectrum from “no all the numbers are lies, it failed!!!” to “well it would have succeeded even more if it weren’t woke!”
The more intelligent right wingers (like - and it’s disheartening to say this - Ben Shapiro) have already got on board with “it’s a great movie and Nolan is conservative” tbf.
What if most people just go to see a movie based on whether they expect to be entertained or not
I still haven’t watched the all female ghostbusters. But it does remind me of the absolute batshittery of the Right about what is just a movie.
I'm rereading The Odyssey and was not prepared for the fact that the journey home (Cyclops, Circe, Hades, all that jazz) takes up just four books — half the time devoted to Odysseus back home pretending to be a beggar. Ancient Greeks must have been way more into beggar-pretending than killer giants
The funniest "why isn't it more faithful to the text?" complaint I saw was the classicist who seemed to want the movie to end with Tom Holland hanging dozens of slave girls. I think that would have been a tough watch tbh
Started rereading via the Emily Wilson translation. Can’t get my classics teacher’s voice out of my head about Telemachus. ‘He is such a drip!’ Tom Holland does not solve that perception.
You _have_ listened to Natalie Haynes’s summary on Stands Up for the Classics, I take it? Particularly the part about the years he spends with Calypso “having a lovely time”.
To be fair, this kind of thing still has modern appeal, like whenever a presumed-dead character returns in Eastenders, don’t they get viewing figures comparable to when they kill a character or burn the Queen Vic down?
Ah, you must be reading the version that was translated by killer giants.
Got to say, I found it hard going. The famous interesting bits seem to be over pretty quickly and the other stuff is all pretty... well... boring 😬
