New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani told The New York Times he was in "an active conversation" with the city Law Department about whether he could order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if Netanyahu visits New York City for the United Nations General Assembly in September. Mamdani said on a New York Times show that "I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague," referring to the International Court of Justice. Mamdani has previously signaled during his campaign that he would explore arresting Netanyahu if he came to the city. House Republicans have called for an investigation into whether Mamdani’s administration might violate federal law by pursuing such an arrest. The immediate next step is the Law Department’s legal review to determine whether the mayor has authority to act before any potential arrest could be attempted during the September visit.
