Burnham to announce new North Sea oil and gas drilling plans
Deeply irresponsible. We're in a climate crisis. This is such a terrible start. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Says a lot about Labour that they feel they have to stick by their own made-up fiscal rules but will happily break any manifesto pledge that is inconvenient to them.
Saw this article earlier and thought the same. There is so little to be gained from this: the fields are almost depleted, it will barely help with the country’s energy security, it will not reduce the cost of our oil & gas, and it exacerbates the climate crisis. Very poor decision to go with this.
Zack if this proves to be the case and indeed one tends to think so what can we all do. We can keep protecting and presenting facts etc but my gut feeling is @andyburnham.bsky.social who doesn’t interact on here as he should is just unfortunately more of the same just in a different wrapper .
This act alone would destroy Burnham’s credibility for me. Only the Green Party can be trusted to tackle the climate crisis.
WTF is wrong with him? Has he been bought by Big Oil like so many other politicians?
Nonsensical. Practically, financially, politically, scientifically. Europe is moving massively towards renewables and we, American style, move backwards.
Either the next Prime Minister doesn't understand the climate emergency - which is bad. Or he doesn't care about it. Which is much, much worse. Leave that oil and gas under the sea. And create employment in developing renewable energies instead. Future generations will thank you... 👍
What a surprise eh? 🙄
Fucking hell. Burnham has really hit the ground running as a completely donor controlled twat.
🤦🏻♂️ Failed before the off. How long before the Blue Sky refrain is ‘fuck Burnham’?
He was undemocratically installed with glowing reviews by the establishment media He's immediately started implementing policy that nobody except corporate voices want. This is corruption.
And the people looked from Burnham to Starmer and from Starmer to Burnham, but already it was impossible to say which was which.
We're living in a critical phase of environmental awareness and action, yet the 'socialist' Labour party in the UK are playing by the Trump playbook. Wonder how well this is gonna go for Burnham? #UK #ClimateCrisis #Burnham
Labour, like the Tories,ReformUK & all their toxic right-wing extremist offshoots aren't on you or our planets side, they're on the side of the rich, corrupt criminals & fraudsters that OWN/BUY THEM Vote @greenparty.org.uk for our planet, all it's inhabitants, for communities & a better place #TaxTheRich
We have to be the most ignorant species on earth
I totally agree, but feel this is much deeper than an Andy Burnham problem. This goes right back to the first 1972 UN Environment Conference where governments promised action on the them emerging ecological crisis, and then failed to take any of the action promised. 1/6
So Andy Burnham has repeatedly committed to sticking to Labour's 2024 manifesto, yet we're now told that his first major announcement will be breaking its commitment not to drill for new oil and gas in the North Sea.
Greens: "With heatwaves causing deaths, wildfires and extreme weather across the country, approving new oil and gas drilling is exactly the wrong response and will do nothing to bring down energy bills."
This will go down like a lead balloon with most people - not Badenoch obviously. We only have one planet.
He's decided the best opening gambit as is to announce oil and gas drilling and appointing the ghoulish hypocrite and anti-immigration daughter of immigrants as chancellor despite her having no experience or qualifications for the role is quite frankly an astonishing way to fail on day -2 as PM. 🤬🤦♀️
All that wearing a Fred Perry and springing about to New Order going to wear off in record time.
I was in Taiwan last week and this is the view from the hotel. Solar panels everywhere and a functioning public transport system. I commuted using the bullet train in the background (also covered in solar panels) the equivalent of Manchester to Sheffield in 10 minutes. That's what's wrong in the UK.
Given that little actual drilling is likely to take place as the viability of fossil fuel extraction is overwhelmed by renewable energy, I suspect the relaxtion is entirely superficial.
Keep your hands off the North Sea you twat.
Well, he said he wanted to reach out to other parties, so I guess this is him working constructively with Kemi Badenoch. A new kind of politics, a reimagining of “what things could be like if we changed the way politics works”.
We will be told it is just going on with the Tory licenses which I think will be an early inflection point to perceive the new government as slimy. Though FWIW I would treat all reporting on the new government with a pinch of salt until they’re actually in power given journos love of gossip
Andy Burnham is going directly against the 2024 Labour manifesto by doing this (as the BBC correctly and prominently notes). That opens a door that his team have tried hard to keep shut. If he can go against the manifesto for *this*, he will hear, why not for other issues?
If his line is that he feels he can only legitimately u-turn on the manifesto on a small number of issues, the choice of this one will look even more perverse. He will never be able to outdo the tories and reform on climate denial. And north sea drilling will deliver nothing on energy prices.
I’d be surprised if this has been leaked by anyone in his team though. They’ve been trying to keep a lid on things is what I understood?
They’ll no doubt argue on the technicality that the precise manifesto wording was ‘we will not issue new licences to explore new fields’. They could claim Rosebank and Jackdaw had been approved, despite the subsequent legal challenge.
Thought thus was just about honouring the existing agreements for Rosebank and Jackdaw, which was within the manifesto Are you saying he's agreeing more?
I just wish someone would lay out the facts around this issue. bsky.app/profile/alan...
Jesus. Can we not be fucking sensible for a change? Forever governed by fucking morons. And I thought Burnham would be different. I had hoped for years.
Andy Burnham rips up a manifesto commitment on oil and gas drilling that will have negligible economic impact. So he's going to rip up the Brexit red lines to deliver the much larger economic benefits of rejoining the EU. Right? bestforbritain.org/publication/...
Probably not the manifesto pledge I’d have fudged first.
You effing idiot! @andyburnham.bsky.social An utterly ignorant and nonsensical decision Look around you for f*ck's sake And explain your decision to the relatives of the 2,700 people who have just died in the UK as a consequence of the mass burning of fossil fuels www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
I am waiting for next week and the actual announcements, not really listening to the pre-announcements because who knows what will actually happen.
Let's wait and see what the real news is and why. He has promised to be open. Let's give him the chance.
I’m going to wait till it comes out of the horses mouth. IF true & not just jackdaw & rosebank (which would fit under manifesto) it would be time to unleash the biggest campaign EVER. Until then, worth wondering who this briefing against Miliband & for drilling benefits 🥹 bsky.app/profile/levi...
I'm also waiting to hear from Burnham himself. Headlines rarely reflect accurate facts. If it turns out to be correct, then I feel i can start criticising it
What does Burnham think he’s playing at? This will break Labour’s manifesto & play into Tory & reform hands We don’t need more North Sea drilling, especially as Tories sold oil sea beds so now goes on international market It won’t make gas cheaper. Should focus on renewable energy not more oil
If he does this, he is genuinely worse than Starmer. I don't think that a good solution for Labour to losing loads of voters to the Greens and Lib Dems is to become MORE right-wing. But what do I know? Labour, themselves, apparently think this.
A definite sign he’s stuck in the 80’s/90’s as we suspected,he isn’t the man for 2026 Just like he wasn’t twice for leadership before. Clowns will clown
Well that didn’t last long, any wavering Labour voters who were creeping back into the fold will now hopefully turn tail and join the progressive Greens
I haven't been a fan of Burnham, but I will hang on until next week before condemning him. The media have proven time and again, they can't be trusted.
It's likely BBC rubbish because the second paragraph states: "The Labour Party's 2024 manifesto - which the new leader said he would follow - had pledged to not issue new licences but to honour existing ones." However, time will tell.
What an absolute dickhead. Anyone else starting to dread what his cabinet is going to look like?
Burnham to announce plans for new North Sea oil and gas drilling. So there we have it, the new Labour "leader" is bought and paid for by the Oil and Gas industry before he even enters No. 10. Nothing changes. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose 🤡🤦♂️🤷♂️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
He has lost any benefit of the doubt on day one. What a twat.
If true, it's a kick in the nuts for any idea that he is any any way remotely progressive
Utterly depressing 😞 The world is on fire 🔥 we need investment in renewable energy not oil & gas
It’s the BBC so no idea if it’s true
"It is a signal that government backs the people and places that have powered this country for generations," the letter added. Residents of the North Sea must be thrilled. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Burnham determined for his government to lift off with a crash landing.
This will have zero effect on energy markets prices - people's bills. But if you own BP shares, woohoo!
Game over. The team is just warming up, but the ref has already blown the whistle.
I knew there was something fishy about Burnham.
More North Sea Oil won't make much difference to anything, but it's interesting which manifesto commitments they are prepared to drop and why. Mahmood as Chancellor and drilling looks like a renewed attempt to go after the socially conservative voters Labour lost.
Steam locos to be brought back?
So Burnham signals that net zero is not a priority. I wonder if Miliband will resign? Or be replaced? And The Times is reporting that Shabana Mahmood accepted the post of Chancellor because it would give her more power to control immigration. Has Burnham learnt nothing from Starmer's tenure?
Ironically, there were once “residents of the North Sea”. It was called Doggerland. Between 10000 and 7000BCE, the area was inundated by rising sea levels. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doggerl...
Utterly appalling. Burnham is a danger to the survival of the planet #BurnhamOutNOW
Just another Starmer disaster in Burnham clothes 🤬
planet’s dying either way. this does make him an even bigger stooge of the yanks than his predecessor tho, a breathtaking accomplishment.
*Typo New moniker just dropped "Andy Burn 'em" Northern Starmer, as predictable as it is depressing
Lower than my lowest expectations.
