Burnham to announce new North Sea oil and gas drilling plans

newsJul 18, 2026462,434

Andy Burnham will announce plans to allow new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea when he becomes prime minister on Monday, the BBC has been told. Labour's 2024 manifesto pledged not to issue new licences while honouring existing ones, but details of Burnham's new oil and gas approach have not been released. The row centers on two Scottish fields, Rosebank and Jackdaw, which regulators approved in 2022 and 2023 under the Conservatives but whose approvals were overturned in 2025 after a legal challenge. The drilling announcement will form part of a wider package including plans to bring water and energy companies under public control, a new council house-building programme, and measures aimed at easing the cost of living. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, likely to have a senior cabinet role under Burnham, has called the Rosebank licence "climate vandalism," while the oil and gas industry and several trade unions recently urged Burnham and Labour MPs to back North Sea production. Burnham returned to Parliament in a by-election a month ago, secured backing from 379 Labour MPs and all 11 affiliated trade unions, and is finalising his cabinet ahead of taking office.

Deeply irresponsible. We're in a climate crisis. This is such a terrible start. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Either the next Prime Minister doesn't understand the climate emergency - which is bad. Or he doesn't care about it. Which is much, much worse. Leave that oil and gas under the sea. And create employment in developing renewable energies instead. Future generations will thank you... 👍

What a surprise eh? 🙄

Fucking hell. Burnham has really hit the ground running as a completely donor controlled twat.

🤦🏻‍♂️ Failed before the off. How long before the Blue Sky refrain is ‘fuck Burnham’?

He was undemocratically installed with glowing reviews by the establishment media He's immediately started implementing policy that nobody except corporate voices want. This is corruption.

And the people looked from Burnham to Starmer and from Starmer to Burnham, but already it was impossible to say which was which.

We're living in a critical phase of environmental awareness and action, yet the 'socialist' Labour party in the UK are playing by the Trump playbook. Wonder how well this is gonna go for Burnham? #UK #ClimateCrisis #Burnham

We have to be the most ignorant species on earth

I totally agree, but feel this is much deeper than an Andy Burnham problem. This goes right back to the first 1972 UN Environment Conference where governments promised action on the them emerging ecological crisis, and then failed to take any of the action promised. 1/6

So Andy Burnham has repeatedly committed to sticking to Labour's 2024 manifesto, yet we're now told that his first major announcement will be breaking its commitment not to drill for new oil and gas in the North Sea.

Andy Burnham is going directly against the 2024 Labour manifesto by doing this (as the BBC correctly and prominently notes). That opens a door that his team have tried hard to keep shut. If he can go against the manifesto for *this*, he will hear, why not for other issues?

What does Burnham think he’s playing at? This will break Labour’s manifesto & play into Tory & reform hands We don’t need more North Sea drilling, especially as Tories sold oil sea beds so now goes on international market It won’t make gas cheaper. Should focus on renewable energy not more oil
