Bethesda reveals roadmap, confirms Elder Scrolls VI focus and Fallout 5 preproduction
NEW: Bethesda has announced a slew of new Fallout games, including Fallout 5 and Fallout 3 + New Vegas remasters. The company also confirmed my scoop last week that it is working with Obsidian on a Fallout game. I spoke to Todd Howard about the roadmap: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
How are they going to make high quality Fallout games when they just laid of 20% of their veteran workforce? Is this a cruel joke?
Ah, so Microsoft is in the "break the glass" phase of the news cycle
“Howard called the cuts ‘really tough’ for him and his colleagues.” Awe that’s cute, bet it was tougher for all the people who lost their jobs though.
"Hey, let's do everything people wanted with less staff and also pretend we can get it done in anywhere near a timely manner"
"don't lay us off! Look! We are fallout-ing out the wazoo, see???"
ms scrambling to figure out how to turn announcements into money without having to deliver a product
My biggest takeaway from this news is that Microsoft is trying to sell Bethesda
Roadmaps don't mean shit in this industry
After last week's blood bath, this feels obscene.
certamente os 3 estagiários que sobraram estão trabalhando duro nisso
i am very tired of a specific generation of gaming audience willingly gobbling up the memberberry pellets whenever a game exec pulls a nostalgia lever because they're chasing the net rev from 15 years ago without recognizing how those works meaningfully impacted or innovated the medium at that time
If it was 2011, then I'd be excited, but we gotta be honest with ourselves: FNV (not made by BGS) is the only good Fallout game since BGS got the franchise, and BGS has had its narrative/quest design milkshake drunk by CDPR in the intervening years. Compare Witcher 3/CP2077 to Starfield and... yeah.
After what happened at Microsoft from the previous weeks this news doesn't feel exciting at all. Only desperation...
han estado tocándose los cojones toda la generación (va también por sony) y ahora que ejecutan mil despidos y hacen mil mierdas anticonsumidor sacan juegos; irse a la mierda
Mmmm somebody's trying to rewrite the narrative on Obsidian working on a new Fallout game, huh Todd. Kinda like when the anniversary edition of Fallout New Vegas was announced and the box was covered in Bethesda branding with nary a mention that they didn't actually make it. 🤨
its like when they give a dog a big steak dinner before, yknow
"What matters the most is that the games are good" - as long as we have OD, Fallout 5, who cares, right? Everything's fine!
*frantically pulling levers* Pay no attention to the layoffs behind the curtain!
frustrating being excited for these games and dreading future reports about how they were made and what happened to the hardworking devs who made it happen
You were going great work before, but you are absolutely killing it since moving to Kotaku.
Even if someone wouldn't care about the employees at all...why should anyone trust Xbox about what games they say they're making? They announced the new Senua when they already knew they were going to be selling or closing Ninja Theory. They just lied.
Fallout 5 will be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive according to Bethesda's Todd Howard in an interview. "I hate XBOX. If I had the time, energy, and a jack hammer, I would dismantle Microsoft's HQ all by myself. Hooba dooba, please pre-order Fallout 5, it just works." Source: me lol
by time fallout 5 comes out todd is gonna look like a fallout 3 npc
I only game on my PC. So I guess I won't be playing Fallout 5. Sorry.
Well, guess I won't be playing Fallout 5.
Todd's gonna get a brand new jacket
OK. I guess I’ll miss Fallout 5 (until it’s free on Netflix).
The framerate will be 16 times 1 and the only faction will be the Minutemen
Bethesda announces Fallout 'roadmap' following Xbox 'reset': ▪️Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters in development ▪️New Fallout from Obsidian ▪️Fallout 5 in pre-production ➡️ bethesda.net/en/article/7...
That's all cool, though definitely reads like a corporate requirement rather than how they had any desire to announce anything. Especially with Elder Scrolls still multiple years off. We aren't seeing any Fallout 5 from BGS til like.... 2033 at the earliest.
It is still wild to me that it took the CEO of XBox effectively putting a gun to his head to get Howard to agree to let Obsidian touch their IP again. IDK the specifics of the bad blood there, but New Vegas 2 has always been a "print money" button and Bethesda just sitting on it was always crazy.
Microsoft gave the franchise to Obsidian and then Bethesda is like, oh no we are still in charge. Fuck you Todd. You company sucks and you have not bothered to make a new game engine in 20+ years. Just a bunch of lazy rich kids wasting time. The last game of theirs I bought was Skyrim on PS3.
'The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim' has sold 65 million units. 'Fallout 4' has sold 35 million units.
I love the SF number is in hours played bc you either bounced off early or you're a sicko and have 1k+ hours and counting (it's me I'm the sicko)
Ja gut, das Game wurde auf allen Systemen verkauft welche es gibt, mit Ausnahme meiner Oral B Elektronischen Zahnbürste. Und das nur weil die kein Display hat 😂
The obfuscation here is somewhat funny by listing hours for Starfield because they probably wouldn’t want to list the hours, if possible to track, for Skyrim and FO4 as a comparison point.
And just as meaningfully the five people who enjoyed Starfield but did not pay for it because of our stupid Netflix But Gaming release strategy have played it a lot! Don’t ask any questions!
It’s hard not to be cynical about a massive letter talking from Bethesda about all the games they’re working on when Xbox as a whole reeks of desperation. I mean, they reportedly announced Senua with the express intent of selling Ninja Theory. How can I be sure this isn’t another ploy?
This letter is either to appease investors or someone at Xbox looked at Bethesda’s output in recent years and demanded some kind of public commitment to raise that output.
While deceptive, I do think Xbox did them a solid by showing Senua. Still, as a fan of a lot of games Xbox has put out over the years, it's hard to trust them given how many titles they've announced and cancelled. Scalebound, Perfect Dark (still mad), Everwild, Contraband, Phantom Dust remake etc.
Just more words and PR. Will those games come out? Probably. Will you and I be older and more grey when they do? Very much so.
Yeah, my mind went to the Senua bullshit as well. I don't know why they think they should be trusted after that.
i don’t believe that bethesda are capable of making a new elder scrolls or fallout that is up to modern standards.
I'm worried they're gonna fuck up the New Vegas remasters, tbh, let alone a whole new game
Imo culturally Bethesda’s only job is to make a wonderful canvas of shit that modders fix for them
Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. I'm more hopeful about Oblivion's new Fallout game.
For me Cyberpunk set a new bar, especially in terms of first person RPGs and nothing in Bethesda's entire catalogue leads me to think they can match it, let alone surpass it
They take too long to make games. FromSoftware can pump out games of similar-scale twice as fast, whatever Bethesda is doing needs to be rethought. By the time Starfield came out, it was 11 years old and Baldur's Gate 3 had changed EVERYTHING, just no flexibility
Tbh, they weren't capable of making games to the standards of the days when they did... they just made highly successful modding platforms
