On Thursday July 16 a man slipped past security at NBC's Rockefeller Plaza and entered a restricted area near Studio 1A at 30 Rockefeller Center, then approached Today co-anchor Craig Melvin at about 9 a.m., the NYPD told TMZ. The intruder first asked for longtime host Al Roker, then allegedly lunged at Melvin while yelling a racial slur as he followed him into the restricted area, sources said. Studio staff and security detained the unidentified man and officers placed him into custody; police and NBC said no one was injured and the incident was not captured on the program's broadcast. NBC told The Independent the person entered an unauthorized vestibule near Studio 1A, Melvin alerted security, and the individual was taken into custody without further incident. The Today show is cooperating with law enforcement as they investigate the matter and NBC said it is reviewing security protocols. Melvin has not commented; he later posted an Instagram Story showing him posing with actors Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland.
