Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper said he did not know a personalized Cameo video he recorded would be used by FanDuel as a reward for a VIP customer and that he did not consent to that use. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the customer, Terry Thompson, wagered about $18.5 million with FanDuel and later sued after losing $1.5 million, according to a March lawsuit filed by the Public Health Advocacy Institute in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court. Harper posted a screenshot of the Cameo request and said the ask came from “your host Bryttanni at FanDuel”; the delivered video included FanDuel’s logo and addressed the customer and his young son by name. Harper wrote Monday, hours before the Home Run Derby, “Had I known FanDuel’s true intent, I would not have made the video... I did not consent to it, and FanDuel had no right to do it.” FanDuel responded that it is “committed to fostering a culture of responsible gaming and protecting our customers” and said employees are trained to flag signs of problem gambling while the company reviews its policies. The dispute is tied to the ongoing civil case against FanDuel and DraftKings alleging the sportsbooks exploited a customer’s gambling addiction and could prompt further scrutiny of how sportsbooks use promotional content for VIP players.
