Manchester United in advanced talks to sign Youri Tielemans

Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans by triggering the £35million release clause in his contract. The 29-year-old is under contract at Villa until June 2028; Villa offered him new terms but must accept the mechanism in his deal. Tielemans helped Villa win the Europa League last season and provided two goals and seven assists in 35 appearances across all competitions in 2025-26. United pivoted toward Tielemans after abandoning their current pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson, a deal that had been agreed at €40.5million plus €4.5million in potential add-ons. United have already signed Andrey Santos for £48million plus £2million in bonuses as part of a midfield rebuild following Casemiro’s departure and injury absence to Manuel Ugarte. Contact is ongoing between all parties to finalise the transfer, and United may still revisit the Ederson situation later in the window.

Very smart piece of business, this. Given that we need 3 new midfielders, now isn’t the time to be gambling. Santos should be fine having played a number of games for Chelsea, Tielemans is as safe a bet as you can get and for an excellent price. One we should have bought years ago!

Can get onboard with this as long as a) the fee is reasonable, and b) the final CM signing adds the physicality we clearly lack. YT raises the technical floor a lot but not much of an athlete. Suspect a lot will dismiss it as United being cheap but Santos/Tielemans and then, say, Baleba - not bad
