Former Olympian pleads not guilty in Reflecting Pool damage case

David Hearn, a 67-year-old former three-time Olympic canoe racer from Bethesda, Maryland, pleaded not guilty Thursday in D.C. Superior Court to a single felony count of property destruction for allegedly damaging the recently renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Hearn entered the plea through an attorney; prosecutors say he caused more than $1,000 in damage. Defense attorney Norm Eisen called the case an abuse of prosecutorial power and said Hearn is innocent, while attorney Mary Dohrmann urged the judge not to impose supervision, describing Hearn as an upstanding citizen. Judge Carmen McLean declined to require court supervision and set a status hearing for August 5. Prosecutor Kevin Reddington said the government sought only a stay-away order without specifying locations in court. Hearn has said he reached into the pool to examine peeled sealant during a June 19 bike ride, briefly touched a chunk and released it when told to do so by a park worker; he was detained for five hours by National Guard troops and U.S. Park Police. The case comes after a multi-million dollar renovation launched before the nation’s 250th independence celebrations and public claims by President Donald Trump, without presented evidence, that vandals damaged the pool.

MacFarlane: Welcome back to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has retained its very swampy, green-like color. It’s still fenced off. It’s still inaccessible. It’s still not in its best shape. It is reflecting again, but it’s almost like it’s quarantined in its green-like state.
