The Los Angeles Angels activated Mike Trout from the 10-day injured list Wednesday and he homered in his first game back, hitting a two-run shot off Robby Ahlstrom as the Angels routed the Texas Rangers 13-1 in Arlington. Trout missed 17 games with a right hamstring strain that began June 17 and was reinstated in time for the July 14 All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park, where he is projected to be a starting outfielder for the American League. The 34-year-old is set to make his 12th All-Star appearance and has slashed .234/.394/.472 with 17 homers, 36 RBIs, 12 doubles, seven stolen bases and 54 runs across 74 games this season. Trout returned to the lineup as the designated hitter but says he plans to keep playing center field regularly; manager Kurt Suzuki indicated he might limit Trout’s workload initially. Jo Adell also homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs in the win, and Vaughn Grissom had four hits and four RBIs as part of the Angels’ offensive outburst. Trout’s availability had been a major issue in recent seasons, and his activation restores a central piece of the Angels’ lineup heading into the All-Star break.
