Louise Lasser, Mary Hartman star, dies at 87

“Nothing I did in my career, ever, was planned.” Farewell to Louise Lasser (1939-2026) — a singular presence on stage, TV commercials, in films like BANANAS (1971) and, most unforgettably, as the title character on the Emmy-winning, Norman Lear-produced MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN (1976-77).

I ram stunned and grieving: Louise Lasser is no longer with us. Raise a glass to the genius who created Mary Hartman and her waxy yellow build-up. "What kind of a madman would shoot two goats and eight chickens? [pause] And the people... the people, of course."

Farewell to the singular Louise Lasser, unforgettable in any role she tackled, but particularly memorable to horror fans for her go-for-broke turn in BLOOD RAGE. Our condolences to her friends, family and many fans.

Farewell LOUISE LASSER 💔 In Norman Lear’s MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN, those pigtails, bangs, and baby-doll gingham dresses became 1970s TV history. From early Woody Allen films to NyQuil and Excedrin spots, her droll deadpan made nerves funny, strange, and touchingly human.

Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman was completely original, and a completely weird show. I watched it during summer vacation. I remember it being on late at night. Maybe because it was considered controversial at the time. R.I.P. Louise Lasser.

R.I.P., Louise Lasser. Of course she was great in “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” but I always think of Michael O’Donoghue’s quote about the time she hosted SNL: “[She was] a nice woman going through a few problems, but I wanted to force her to eat her goddamn pigtails at gunpoint."

RIP Louise Lasser. A unique and quirky talent who always delighted, especially in the small screen proto-slasher Isn't it Shocking.

Ah, Rest in Peace Louise Lasser. Such a great actress and truly shined as likely no one else could as Mary Hartman.

People remember BLOOD RAGE for the "cranberry sauce" bit but for me the highlight is the late Louise Lasser calling the police and saying variations on, "It's a real, a real emergency!" over and over again, just completely taking the piss out of the slasher movie and the filmmakers letting her. #RIP

Louise Lasser has died. If you've never watched 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,' do so. I always found it was fun to watch an episode of it, then an episode of Dark Shadows, and alternate for a while.
