NWS issues widespread severe thunderstorm warnings across U.S. counties

newsJul 4, 202641256

On the evening of July 4, multiple National Weather Service offices issued widespread severe thunderstorm warnings and watches across Plains and Midwest counties for damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Radar-indicated warnings included 60 mph wind gusts and up to 1.25 inch hail near Roosevelt, New Mexico, a 60 mph wind and under 0.75 inch hail threat for New London Connecticut and Suffolk New York until 10:30 PM EDT, and a Boston/Norton, Massachusetts warning in effect until 10:45 PM EDT. The Storm Prediction Center posted Mesoscale Discussion 1507 listing tornado potential and large hail, and an MPX office issued a tornado-capable severe thunderstorm warning near Granite Falls, Minnesota, moving southeast at 25 mph. Heavy rains also prompted Flood Warnings in central Indiana counties with flooding expected through late evening. The convective outbreak combined with near-record heat led to power outages affecting about 250,000 people in one reported compound event, complicating cooling amid heat advisories and excessive heat warnings. Local offices canceled some watches as storms moved, while other warnings remained in effect into late evening, leaving counties to manage wind damage, downed trees, and localized flash flooding next.

This is a clear example of a compound hazard event (i.e., amplified societal impacts). Severe thunderstorms knocked out power for nearly 250,000 people last night, and many are now seeing near-record heat today while still without electricity. Orange: heat advisories Pink: excessive heat warnings

This is getting a little terrifying. Wet Bulb temperatures - that combination of heat and humidity at which sweating can't cool you and you just cook - are spreading across the East. Yesterday, 11 attendees to Trump's goofy "State Fair" were hospitalized - 7 needed advanced life support.

Double climate whammy for the northeastern US today.

A few days ago, we even had over a thousand heat-related deaths in Western and Central Europe. Morgues in France were overwhelmed and could no longer accept any more bodies. Hospitals in Germany called in all medical staff... 1/2
