One year on, critics say Trump's 'Big, Ugly Bill' is harming workers

One year after President Donald Trump signed the GOP "One Big Beautiful Bill" into law on July 4, critics say the package has inflicted deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP while delivering large tax breaks to the wealthy. The law enacted the biggest cuts in Medicaid and SNAP histories, and Protect Our Care estimates 3.8 million people lost Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage since enactment; combined with the lapse of ACA premium subsidies, about 8 million more people are now uninsured. A Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis shows SNAP enrollment fell by 4 million between the bill’s passage and March 2026, with more than 3.5 million people losing food assistance, including 770,000 children. Health insurance premiums have more than doubled for nearly 22 million families, with further premium increases expected in 2027, and more than 1,000 hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes have closed or face closure, especially in rural areas. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Republicans "stole from the working class to give to the rich," and Protect Our Care president Brad Woodhouse warned millions more will lose care as paperwork and eligibility restrictions expand. Democrats say they are fighting to lower costs and restore coverage, while advocates warn the worst effects of the law are still to come.

Tom Kean had insurance to help him with his treatment. He voted FOR the big ugly bill, which takes away health subsidies for many vulnerable Americans who are in the same circumstance as Kean. #DemVoice1 #ProudBlue #Pinks #RepublicansAreDestroyingAmerica www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
