Progressive Manny Rutinel wins Colorado competitive House primary

politicsJul 1, 2026723,610

State Rep. Manny Rutinel won the Democratic nomination in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District primary, with Decision Desk HQ projecting his victory at 9:33 PM EDT. Rutinel, backed by progressives, will face Republican Rep. Gabe Evans in November in a Toss-Up district that polling and commentators label one of Democrats’ best pickup opportunities. Multiple posts called CO-08 a competitive, Trump+2-leaning seat, and Democrats see Rutinel’s nomination as strengthening their chance to flip the seat. The primary result arrives alongside other progressive upsets in Colorado this cycle, reinforcing momentum for insurgent Democratic candidates statewide.

A downballot result: In the highest-profile Democratic primary for Colorado's state Senate, the progressive side has easily prevailed. Chela Garcia Irlando, an environmental advocate, has won over Andrés Carrera, a former staffer for Governor Jared Polis.

I saw "left-wing insurgent ousts..." and assumed this was a story about a coup in Latin America, and not the Democratic Party primary in Denver. I'm sure NYT also got extra credit from its corporate overlords for running the most menacing photo they could find (which is not particularly menacing).

NYT headline: "Left-Wing Insurgent Ousts 15-Term Congresswoman in Colorado
Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist, unseated Representative Diana DeGette in a Democratic primary to represent the Denver area."
