Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser won the Democratic nomination for governor Tuesday night, defeating U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet. The Associated Press called the race for Weiser shortly after 8 p.m.; Bennet phoned to concede soon after, a campaign spokesperson said. Weiser led Bennet by about 11.7 percentage points, drawing nearly 56 percent of the vote statewide in the two-person contest as of early Wednesday afternoon. Weiser called out pundits who had labeled Bennet’s campaign a “coronation” and criticized “out-of-state billionaires” backing Bennet, saying his win was a victory for grassroots volunteers. The campaign featured heavy outside spending for Bennet that Weiser said his team “broke through,” and Weiser promised to run the same people-focused approach in the November general election. Weiser will face the winner of Colorado’s three-way Republican primary in November in the first open governor’s race since Jared Polis was elected in 2018.

RESULT: In an upset, even if it was looking likelier in recent weeks, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has defeated Senator Michael Bennet for the Democratic primary for governor. Bennet has been the state's centrist senator since his 2008 win. He'll stay in the Senate (term ends in 2028).

NEW: NBC News projects AG Phil Weiser defeats Sen. Michael Bennet for the Democratic nomination for Colorado Governor. Weiser will almost certainly be Colorado's next Governor as Coloradans have elected just one Republican Governor in 55 years.
