Melat Kiros ousts Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado primary

politicsJul 1, 2026573,577

Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist, defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, with the AP, CNN and NBC projecting Kiros the winner. The upset removes a near-30-year incumbent; DeGette first won her seat in 1996, meaning Kiros is younger than DeGette’s congressional tenure. Kiros has been described as a political newcomer who lost a job after speaking out about Israel and Gaza, and she ran to the left of DeGette, framing the race around anti-establishment and foreign policy issues. DeGette was backed by establishment groups including Pro-Choice Majority Action, which received most of its funding from EDW Action Fund, a group that took roughly $1 million from AIPAC, an element Kiros and supporters portrayed as a liability. Observers noted the result continues a string of insurgent left victories this primary season and makes Colorado’s reliably Democratic 1st District almost certain to remain in Democratic hands in November. At DeGette’s election night watch party reporters described an almost-empty room as Kiros’s victory became clear.

Supporting a genocide and taking money from AIPAC are now a red line and litmus tests for Democrats, but the party's leadership and consultants haven't figured it out yet because of course. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/01/u...
