U.S. lifts restrictions on Anthropic’s most powerful AI models

The U.S. Department of Commerce lifted export and in-country transfer restrictions on Anthropic’s most powerful models, clearing the way for the company to restore access to Claude Mythos and Claude Fable. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the decision followed Anthropic’s agreement to “proactively detect and address security risks” posed by the models. The models in question are reported as Mythos 5 and Fable 5, which had been blocked earlier amid national security and misuse concerns. Anthropic said it will begin restoring access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on Wednesday after receiving the Commerce Department notification. The move follows months of regulatory friction that included a federal ban from the prior administration on some Anthropic services and legal challenges to that ban, and it removes the principal government constraint that had limited Anthropic’s ability to distribute its top-tier models.
