Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli tells Willson Contreras 'sit down, boy', benches clear

sportsJul 1, 2026883,889

In the bottom of the fourth at Fenway Park, Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli struck out Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras looking and shouted at him, an exchange that led to both dugouts and bullpens clearing. Contreras, who had started toward the dugout and looked back at Cavalli, removed his helmet and threw it into the pile of players; umpires ejected Contreras, Red Sox pitcher Nate Eaton and interim manager Chad Tracy, and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas. Cavalli was not ejected; he finished the night with seven innings, one hit allowed, 13 strikeouts, no walks and no earned runs as Washington won 8-1. Cavalli said after the game he was upset that Contreras had brushed past him in the first inning and that a few words were exchanged after the strikeout. Tracy said he heard Cavalli shout "sit down, boy" loudly and questioned why Cavalli was not among those tossed; Tracy and Contreras both said Contreras apologized at one point, which Cavalli denied. The game resumed after the dustup and continued without further interruption.

Here's Cade Cavalli striking out Willson Contreras and screaming "sit down boy!" at him. Really nice and a great week for it. Does Manfred 1) do the obvious thing or 2) do nothing because he doesn't want a Turning Point spokesman to do a viral tweet about how he won't watch baseball anymore

I have carved out the Nationals-Red Sox recap and have made it available free to everyone. In it I talk about Cade Cavalli hurling a racial epithet at a player of color and put it in context with other such incidents. The ball is in Rob Manfred's court.

Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli screams 'Sit down, boy!' at Red Sox 1B Wilson Contreras upon striking him out. Brouhaha ensues and benches clear. Contreras is ejected from the game. Cavalli is not. Protesting a racist epithet gets you thrown out, but throw the racist epithet and you get off free.

As a Hispanic former baseball player I can tell you multiple racist things and I every time the other party said they were not being racist and every time they got away with it. That is why we rush the mound to beat your ass because we know the only way you will learn.

Well surely this is easy to prove as must have been calling a bunch of white guys "boy" this season, right? Oh wait this is the only time he's done this? Strange!

White manager and GM said Cavalli didn’t intend to “demean someone in some racial way.” “‘I’m extremely torn up about the way that things were perceived,’ Cavalli said” So he’s not upset that he said a racist thing, he’s upset that it is a racist thing to say? That’s fucking weird

BK?4

What did you think he was gonna say? “Of course it was, I’m a racist”

Last week, my son, nephew, and I passed a man on a hiking trail in Utah. When he got to where my wife and my nephew's mother had stopped, he said: "That colored boy was worrying me." After learning he's our family, he said: "I didn't mean anything by that." Except yeah - you did.

It's not entirely up to you man

Justice Alito would agree, apparently.

I am equally pissed it's fucking Mikolas that is actively grappling with Contreras. Fuck him, too.

Things get heated at Fenway after Cade Cavalli tells Willson Contreras to "sit down boy" after striking him out. Benches clear and Contreras hurls his helmet. Contreras and Eaton were ejected for the #RedSox, Mikolas was ejected for the #Nationals
