Florida executing prisoners at record pace

newsJun 30, 2026121,325

Florida executed 19 people last year and has executed nine so far this year, a pace that ProPublica says exceeds all other states combined. Early last year Governor Ron DeSantis began signing death warrants at a faster rate than before, producing the state’s most intense period of executions in decades. The 19 executions last year shattered Florida’s previous single-year record of 11, which dated to 1936. ProPublica reports that roughly 60 percent of those given death sentences in Florida received that penalty from judges following non-unanimous jury recommendations. The state also leads the nation in death row exonerations, with 30 people cleared since 1973. The article quotes advocates saying that “death watch, once a lonely way station, has begun to resemble an assembly line.”

NEW: As most states move away from the death penalty, Florida is executing more prisoners than ever before. Last year, 19 people were put to death — shattering the state’s previous annual record of 11, first set in 1936. with @nytimes.com
