Speaker Mike Johnson 'says the quiet part out loud' on protection program

politicsJun 26, 2026534,921

House Speaker Mike Johnson told allies that he “runs the protection program” and vowed “we’ll take care of you,” saying Democrats would “turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body” and target the president’s family, the cabinet, donors and friends if Republicans lose the midterms. Johnson made the remarks while urging fellow Republicans to support a legislative push to limit oversight and shield the White House and its allies from probes. The comment was reported as an explicit admission that House GOP leaders plan to use majority power to block or blunt Democratic investigations. Critics compared Johnson’s phrasing to mob-style protection rhetoric and said the remark confirmed fears Republicans intend to prevent accountability for the president and his circle. Supporters in the room were being reassured the party would be defended if control of Congress is retained.

Mike Johnson: “If we lose the midterms, the Democrats will go after the president’s family, the cabinet, his donors, friends, and the rest of you who have committed crimes.”

If Republicans maintain their majority in Congress, Speaker Mike Johnson intends to spend the next two years running an anti-oversight “protection program” for the White House and its allies. I’m honestly a little surprised he admitted this out loud and in public. www.ms.now/rachel-maddo...

Mike Johnson is fully embracing the mafia politics of Trump

What I thought Trump & co had on Mike Johnson cannot possibly be even close to what they actually have on Mike Johnson.

He’s running on this, so Dems should definitely run on accountability

It’s been glaringly obvious for a while that Johnson views his job as advancing Trump et al’s interests, even to the point of subverting and abandoning Congress’s Article I authority. Saying it on the record, though, is an insane mask off moment.

Folks look at you like you're crazy when you say we're in the midst of the worst, most unprecedented Article I constitutional crisis in American history & then it's Friday &

David Brace7

I'm only surprised that he didn't say "protection racket."

Lane Stellmaker7

why shouldn't he? What is anyone going to do about it?

Christopher Howell3

GOP congress running a protection racket sounds very small town council corruption scheme.

For a party that complained a lot about "The Deep State" and then said they were "the most transparent administrations in history", they're sure doing a lot of hiding shit and running interference on transparency/accountability...
