The WNBA suspended Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas for one game and upgraded her foul to a Flagrant-2 after review, saying she recklessly made contact with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark's throat during Wednesday night's game. The league described the play, at the 6:52 mark of the second quarter, as a non-basketball act and issued the penalty following video review. Caitlin Clark exited that game with a back injury, and Fever head coach Stephanie White publicly criticized officials, calling two earlier plays on Clark "cheap shots" that went uncalled. Thomas, a 13-year WNBA veteran, has not previously been suspended by the league. Some commentators argued the contact looked accidental and that Thomas was chasing the ball, while others said the throat contact warranted the upgraded flagrant and suspension. The one-game suspension will keep Thomas out of Phoenix's next scheduled game on June 27, forcing a short-term rotation change for the Mercury.
