Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old Long Island architect, was sentenced June 17, 2026, to life in prison without parole for the Gilgo Beach serial killings. He pleaded guilty in April and admitted to murdering eight women over roughly a 17-year span, including Karen Vergata, whom he had not previously been charged with. Remains of several victims were recovered along a coastal parkway near Gilgo Beach, and family members confronted Heuermann in court, with Jasmine Robinson telling him, "A million years isn’t enough." Judge Timothy Mazzei called Heuermann "a disgusting, small man" as the sentence closed a decades-long investigation and highlighted failures in how authorities handled missing sex workers.
