January 6 defendants pursue millions in claims via FTCA

newsJun 17, 202635325

January 6 defendants, led by Florida attorney Peter Ticktin, are filing Federal Tort Claims Act claims seeking millions in taxpayer-funded compensation. Ticktin has filed roughly 400 FTCA claims and the Department of Justice has sole discretion to decide whether to settle those suits, creating a pathway to pay participants after the administration scrapped its $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. The FTCA lets individuals sue the federal government for monetary damages, and the DOJ's recent FTCA settlements, including $1.25 million payments to Michael Flynn and Carter Page, show precedence for large payouts. If the DOJ approves settlements, taxpayer dollars could finance payments that affect accountability for the January 6 attack and reshape incentives around pardons and rewards.
