Mbappé brace lifts France to 3-1 win over Senegal, becomes France’s leading scorer
Kylian Mbappé scored twice as France beat Senegal 3-1 in their 2026 World Cup opener at East Rutherford, New Jersey. The 27-year-old's second goal was his 58th for France, moving past Olivier Giroud to become the national team's all-time leading scorer. Mbappé's brace also increased his World Cup goal tally and helped France claim three points in Group I. That milestone cements Mbappé's central role for Les Bleus and keeps him on pace to challenge Miroslav Klose's tournament record of 16 World Cup goals.
It is often said that soccer is more than a game. That truth was evident this afternoon, as I joined residents at the Bruckner Boulevard shelter in the Bronx to watch Senegal take on France in the World Cup.
In the United States, the culture of soccer has long been carried by immigrants — people who have brought their traditions and love of the game with them from around the world.
Thank you for showing us what leadership can be.
The Senegalese team played very well against their colonial power. The iron is that the critical French players are the sons of the former colonies
Thank you. As a former Foster Child I understand salute you for all you have done and will do for New Yorkers, especially disadvantaged ones.
Mbappe now has 14 goals in 15 games for France at the World Cup finals - early in his third tournament, with games against Iraq and Norway to come in this group stages. The all-time record is 16 World Cup goals by Miroslav Klose (in 24 games).
Mbappe rises to joint third on this list with Gerd Muller (who got his 14 goals in 13 games; while Just Fontaine got 13 goals in 6 games all in the 1958 tournament).
👏💙 Last goal today was an absolute bomb. Classic Mbappe. Just a wonderful player. Glad I'm half French. My other Italian part is still crying. 😂
