World Cup opening day, Iran draws New Zealand; Cabo Verde holds Spain
Iran rallied twice to draw New Zealand 2-2 in Los Angeles, with New Zealand's Elijah Just scoring both goals and Iran's Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi equalizing. Iran's match was punctuated by protests in Los Angeles and the coach said the team was ordered to leave the U.S. by 11 p.m., after FIFA upheld a ban on Iran's pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flag at matches. In its World Cup debut, Cabo Verde shocked Spain by holding the reigning runner-up to a 0-0 draw, immediately complicating Group E. These results matter because they upend early group forecasts and turn matches into focal points for political expression among diasporas.
⚽️ @jordanuhl.com on Balogun: “1st 🇺🇸 player to score 2 goals in a World Cup game since 1930, he's only a citizen because his pregnant Nigerian mom was barred from a flight home and gave birth in NYC. Trump is trying to end birthright citizenship, which would block stories like his.”
Doesn’t he have babies with immigrants?
Birthright citizenship is enshrined in the USA Constitution under the 14th Amendment. This player was born on US soil! Under the US Constitution, a baby born even on an airplane flying over US territory is guaranteed US citizenship.
At its first World Cup game in Los Angeles, the Iran national team drew spectators who weren’t coming for the soccer, but rather to protest the regime in Tehran.
And what about the violent regime HERE? The U.S. bombed a school & killed over 100 children in Iran! They’re killing immigrants in detention centers and they killed Renee Good & Alex Pretti and there was video. Gtfoh
A bunch of old monarchists don’t amount to a hill of beans. If they want to be ruled by a monarch they can move to England.
How much did AIPAC invest in all of this?
