Workers pour hydrogen peroxide into Lincoln Reflecting Pool to kill algae

scienceJun 16, 2026862,021

Technicians poured gallons of hydrogen peroxide into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., to try to kill a heavy algae bloom. The Reflecting Pool holds roughly 6.75 million gallons of water, and workers were seen emptying individual gallon jugs into the basin days after a $14.2 million renovation under President Donald Trump that repainted the pool a darker "American flag" blue. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down rapidly in sunlight into water and oxygen, so small, daytime pours into millions of gallons are unlikely to eradicate the bloom and raise questions about treatment effectiveness and possible impacts on aquatic life.

Oh yes, that’ll fix it, sure. A gallon of hydrogen peroxide.

My very limited understanding is that this is a medium (12%) concentration and would require several thousand gallons of the stuff. But hey, if it works on cleaning game skulls…

Kiki H11

The ducks will love that!

Trixiebelden757

May those two companies go right out-of business

Nora Lynch7

Trump’s stupidity coupled with his vanity is an insanely expensive duo.

Buttes6

Literally our entire lives have become a series of #VEEP credits reel shots.

Slavuji6

others have done more exacting calculations as to the amount needed, supported by knowledge of chemistry & pool maintenance. I would point out that pouring it this way is too dainty. just cut off the top and dump it in. Massive time waster. or, buy it by the tanker-truck load.

John H3

With that volume of water I really don't believe that this will solve anything, even if the purity was 99 percent, but it might explode.

jungkafka.bsky.social2

won't anyone think of the ducks ?

steveharbor.bsky.social2

Trump recently made a major stock purchase in an industrial manufacturer of hydrogen peroxide. (And RFK jr is launching a campaign promoting it as a safe oral medicinal alternative to all classes of vaccine.)

Jesus why not just dump a bunch of Clorox in there and call it a day

Are all the people who work for trump idiots? (Not referring to the frontline workers. They have to do what the idiots tell them)

Nothing a couple gallons of hydrogen peroxide won’t fix. Algae in the Reflecting Pool continues to grow …

We all knew he wasn't going to drain the swamp, but I didn't think he would actually build a new one.

Jeni McCoy19

They need to give the Reflecting Pool Ivermectin.

TexasCowboy18

Underwater coatings can alter the PH of the water itself, and depending upon whether it's an 'open' or 'closed' coating, it can increase the surface area to harbor algae. A few gallons of anything isn't going to fix the problem, given how much water is in the reflecting pool itself.

Beth Unlimited11

Meanwhile, the guys pouring household containers of hydrogen peroxide into the pool a) know it's not going to work, and b) know it's stupid but they're getting paid so no way they're saying anything.

Noelle Schultz8

ETTD. It has never been beaten yet.😞

Let’s Do This7

The company that took the 14 million to do the work didn’t know this would happen? 🤨

Green Hombre7

Don't let your dog drink from this chemical stew.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN VIEWS7

The sell those pool cleaner robots, you know.

aswegrow.bsky.social6

Doesn't peroxide bleach paint? asking for 13+ million bucks!

California Dreaming6

This seems to be the administration that fixes things that aren't broken and makes them broken after fixing.

Aislinn6

If it weren't for the fact that he spent our money on this, it would be sublimely comical.

T-Fish🇨🇦🍁5

To me it’s par for the course. This administration fails at even the simplest of tasks. They’re the modern version of the Keystone Cops, Laurel and Hardy and the 3 Stooges all wrapped in a neat little bow.

iwillbedamned4

Why do I get the feeling this is just a pretext to him cementing over the whole thing?

🇨🇦 🦋 🇺🇸4

Plot twist: the bottles say "Hydrogen Peroxide"... but the insides are actually some horribly toxic DOW Chemical Agent Orange liquid kill-all. I wouldn't let wildlife near that cess pool. 💀

🦋 Aldamar 🦋 📎🇺🇸🇩🇰🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽4

Making everything worse is kinda his villain super power.

sherylmomof5.bsky.social2

No one ever told Trump as has ever been in a home improvement store that all pre-fab ponds or liners they sell are black. Plus the fact you still need algae eaters in them as well.

john.in.chicago2

"Obviously the radical left lunatic Democrats dumped algae into the Pool. They want trump to look bad. We're working very strongly to remove it, and Kash is diverting 200 FBI agents from their work on violent crime to get to the bottom of this. Nobody knows more about algae than I do, believe me."

Sherri2

At 6.5 million gallons of water it will take about 650 gal of hydrogen peroxide to temporarily kill the algae. Why did they not purchase 55 gal drums? Which Trump has money in a hydrogen peroxide supplier?

Kimberly ☀️2

So Trump hires his pool guy who has no idea how to balance the water. Only massive amounts of chlorine will fix that.
