DOJ says xAI's Grok 'vital' to national security in NAACP turbine suit
The Justice Department asked a federal judge Monday to dismiss an NAACP lawsuit over xAI’s polluting gas turbines, arguing the turbines and xAI’s Grok chatbot are 'vital' to national security. DOJ lawyers told the court the turbines power the data center running Grok and that Grok supports military operations under a Pentagon contract. The NAACP suit challenges pollution and local health impacts from the turbines, and DOJ’s filing seeks to block that environmental claim by invoking national security. If the court accepts the government’s argument, private tech infrastructure could gain broad protection from environmental lawsuits, raising new questions about accountability and community health.
NEW: the US government intervened Monday on behalf of xAI in a lawsuit over its gas turbines, claiming that the company needs to run the turbines in order to power Grok, which is "vital" for national security lots of wild stuff in the filing:
Good ol “vital for national security” clause
Maybe we need to put a bunch of gas turbines near Trump’s golf courses.
so cool this is real life
Cool. Looking forward to nationalizing SpaceX for national security.
Vital for the Administration's strategic CSAM reserve.
the benefits of el neon’s $500 million bet to put a diseased bigoted rapist in the White House continue to accrue
Label Elon Musk and his entire catalogue of corporations as supply chain risks and fully sever their government funding the moment a Democrat takes Presidential office, many people are saying this
So the pile of flaming garbage creating deepfakes and CSAM is vital to national security? That says a lot.
I have come to not believe this government.
Be careful, a lot of people on this website will tell you this is actually “Glonzo”
And they don’t even have the decency to be embarrassed.
This would have worked better a year ago before DOJ lawyers managed to piss off almost every judge in America
All of the intelligence in DC is artificial these days.
AI 🤝 Nuclear “Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta have announced agreements, funded startups, and signed power purchase commitments they claim will power the AI revolution with carbon/free, nuclear-generated electricity.”☢️ ➡️Nuclear safety? Not addressed. thecapitolforum.com/the-forum/th...
It is vital that Grok keep producing sexually explicit celebrity deepfakes. Our national security depends on it.
they are begging for a guillotine solution aren't they?
MechaHitler is essential to national security?
Oh horseshit, make them document it. I’ll bet they can’t and pull a “Trust us, bro.”
They’re only a few steps away from using eminent domain to force more datacenters into existence wherever they want. The national security argument probably is also part of the legal groundwork to call people a terrorist if they oppose data centers.
So the argument is that need the AI to pick bombing targets in Iran? Obeying AI targeting systems, the US has bombed a public park in Tehran because it was called Police Park. www.tehrantimes.com/news/524548/...
So they are basically arguing that xAI effectively can never be made to comply with any regulation or law concerning gas turbines?
1) in-kind payback for the millions Musk donated 2) making sure to keep him on side 3) the people around Trump like Musk or find him useful 4) gotta protect the stock market
Musk/Grok cannot use all their data center output, and are leasing capacity out to other companies. So much BS
Trump is going to make a 99 year contract with grok or something, isn’t he? There is going to be even more colossal corruption involving musk and him. All this is I’m rich, I can do what I want, sue me, I’ll win in the end energy
So having Grok generate naked children is vital to national security?
Could you please upload and link court documents? That used to be Wired standard operating procedure.
Wasn’t vital a few years ago
You cannot have a private company owned by a trillionaire fully above the law "just cause". This kind of shit will literally tear the country apart. And I'm not talking feelings, I mean with god damn nazi-robots, man-made environmental disasters and boot heel crushing fascism.
What is grok doing behind the scenes?
The fact that the US government is using xAI at all is terrifying. It is unusably bad. There is an argument to be made whether the Defense Department should be using AI at all. But if it is it should use a tool that actually works.
U.S. government claiming Musk has the right to poison Memphis because xAI is "vital" to national security, because the Pentagon signed a contract with them. Elite immunity is a cancer that causes cancer, among countless other ills. www.wired.com/story/doj-la...
Without community engagement / consent, it won't be long before these things are justifiably on fire. It is the next step action that is currently missing.
If vital then it should pay MASSIVE COMPENSATION
Native Americans are very familiar with the concept of “national sacrifice” zones. I would hate to see this happen to our Black relatives.
Absolutely outrageous. And also: Given the sheer volume of crap the xAI Colossus facility is spewing into the air (5x nearby Memphis Intl Airport, which is the 2nd largest cargo airport on earth), the effects aren't limited to Memphis. Go to www.memphiscap.org for action steps.
It's clear that a lot of anti-AI people want to make Elon Musk the posterchild of the AI industry to try to demonize it as a whole. Grok is not a successful product. No one uses it for serious work. xAI had to be rolled into highly profitable SpaceX to stay afloat.
Grok is best understood as an ideological vanity project. Elon wanted AI that would propagate his reactionary worldview after getting angry that OpenAI's models were espousing left-wing politics. This goal was at the expense of building a competitively useful tool.
SpaceX is not profitable, it just has a lot of investor money.
you are dealing with people who literally cannot understand that models are different in meaningful ways
grok had such stupid smol model problems. the mode collapse/repetition bias was crazy in grok 4.1. i don't understand how they had that many resources and that much infrastructure and their shit was acting like a 2025 12B.
The tragedy is that loud, uneducated people, often determine the narrative See crypto mining
"highly profitable" might be a relative term here...
wdym its gonna be 90% of US GDP in a decade or two, didnt u read the IPO :p
