Chicago Bears advance plan for stadium in Hammond, Indiana

sportsJun 5, 20261076,024

The Chicago Bears' board voted Thursday to advance plans for a new stadium in Hammond, Indiana, moving the team's proposed home across the Illinois-Indiana border. The plan would mark the first time in the franchise's 106-year history that the Bears intend to play home games outside Illinois, shifting approvals and development responsibility to Hammond and Indiana officials. The board's authorization sends the project into planning and permitting stages rather than committing to construction or a timeline. If built, the Hammond stadium would move construction jobs, tax revenues, and game-day economic activity to northwest Indiana and raise questions about naming, public financing, and the team's identity.

I’m not a football person but I am a taxpayer who is tired of being taken advantage of by sports teams. Fuck the Bears. Let them become the Hammond, Indiana Bears. The City of Chicago should sue them if they call themselves the Chicago Bears, and no Chicagoan should ever go to a game again.

Also, every last member of Friends of the Parks, the organization that so vehemently opposed a museum dedicated to the art of storytelling that focuses on marginalized voices because they wanted the Bears to have a parking lot instead, should be shunned for eternity.

Deb Schlies🏕️🏳️‍🌈🐺🇺🇸63

McCaskey family has been playing a game this whole time, holding the city and state hostage. But Pritzker called their bluff and your children and grandchildren will thank him. Thx JB!!

Josh55

In general, I am against taxpayer money for stadiums. Its a losing proposition for the people of the city, as there is less money available for other taxpayer services.

Groovy Dave24

Sadly, as long as fans pay the exorbitant prices to attend games, it will never change. The cities steal from the poor to give to the wealthy. Yes, the stadiums provide jobs. But imagine how much money would go back to cities if owners didn't exist. (Green Bay!)

Randy Douglas19

The Packers model is looking better and better eh?

hazdaz.bsky.social18

The cities themselves should OWN these teams. If we are putting up the money for their stadiums and paying for the cops to direct traffic and the repair crews to fix the roads due to heavy traffic going to games, then the citizens should reap any benefits.

biscuitdrives.bsky.social16

The owners pocket millions billions the taxpayers get stuck with TAXES and tickets too expensive to enjoy a game.

chisoxsteve.bsky.social15

So which NFL franchise wants to relocate to Chicago? I had no problem shifting my loyalties from the Chicago Cardinals to the Bears, so I can do that again. I'll cheer for the Bears until that happens, but as of today, no more Bears merchandise for me.

curiousgeorge2025.bsky.social9

They still haven’t paid their share for the last stadium. If billionaires want money in kind, then make us silent owners.

bwolfeinator.bsky.social9

exactly how I feel about the Chiefs. How f'n traitorous of the BILLIONAIRE Hunt family after all the support Kansas City has given them. Go ahead mother f'ers, cross the state line. Never support you again.

brbmd.bsky.social8

If taxpayers build a stadium then they can charge franchise owners rent…

Valk8

Indeed, have some self respect. The Bears demanded billions of taxpayer money to stay, that's money that should go to pay teachers, nurses, firefighters and road workers. This will not hurt chicago. Net taxes will be positive and if fans want to go to .. cough.. indiana.. they are free to do so.

Robin Byrd8

A lot of people are going to blame the state for allowing the Chicago Bears to leave for Indiana, but I will not be one of them. The team mishandled the entire situation from the get go. They never produced the studies or reports that addressed the traffic concerns or the infrastructure they wanted.

Half_Pint7

I look forward to the taxpayers of IN paying for the stadium and then not being able to afford to go to a game despite their support of the organization. The cheapest seat in the building for next season was almost $400. Imagine building a new stadium for an org that gives its fans the middle finger

Earl7

I am a football fan. However, I agree that billionaire owners shouldn’t be able to extort money from the taxpayers for stadiums.

Steve Kooba6

The ~Billionaire owners need to realize that access to the city’s people and infrastructure is a privilege. Sorry you couldn’t pressure us into a deal to subsidize your already profitable business. Go back to what you’re good at - generating CTE

Mad Barchetta5

I support you! Frankly, I don't understand why so many people continue to pay the ridiculous ticket, parking and concession prices to watch these games. It's gotten so far out of hand, it's mind-boggling!

Bobby Blue Byrd5

I’m a Bears fan and I agree 100%. Hoosier (“Who’s your”)Bears…

jay206.bsky.social5

I stopped patronizing the NFL after I read how awful they were treating the retired Black players. Not to mention Colin Kaepernick😡

Dogs10Gods05

The McCaskey family's been screwing Bears fans and Chicago since Papa Halas died. F 'em, let them go, we'll end up with something better. 😡

mwilk19.bsky.social4

The same extortion playbook every major sports team owner uses.

geoffro8.bsky.social4

Oakland CA has entered the chat...

tygator.bsky.social4

Time to stop supporting billionaires that own these teams … Fuk um, leave

Meidas Paul Wigton 🫘 🇺🇳🇺🇦4

.. this is why I only cheer on the Packers: only NFL team owned by the city.

Who has all the money?3

I am a HUGE sports fan and am also tired of being taken advantage of by sports teams. The owners seem intent on testing just how outlandish their behavior can become before there is a revolt. Sports is becoming affordable only for those on the upper part of the K shaped economy. #taxtherich

kingbb.bsky.social3

It's time to stop coddling these rich bastards and make them pay for their own stadium!!

Bozzi3

HAMMOND, INDIANA???? Why would anyone go there???? I lived close to there for many years and watch it deteriorate. I doubt it has changed.

Rick 'Rocket' Rose3

Let the online gaming sites pay for the arenas.

Not just blue, Bluey2

And take away "Bears," too. Let them be the Hammond Eggs.

guido-is-my-name.bsky.social2

Boston Patriots -> New England Patriots Chicago Bears -> Chicagoland Bears

T Antony 🏳‍🌈2

I looked up the sports spending in California for our top seven universities while we were building another football stadium for corporate welfare. I really wish I had not done that. And we wonder why 70% of the college graduates cannot pass a civics 101 test.

I'm V and Sunny is my ❤️ 🐾🐾🚴🏻🧘🏻🏋🏻2

💯 Make the little people pay so the rich elites can buy the tix. It's the way of the world and it's never going to change.

enahchine.bsky.social2

LA did that for years. It refused to build a taxpayer funded football stadium.

BoneShark2

The 49ers did the same thing. They moved an hour south to Santa Clara but kept the San Francisco name. When they show a game on national t.v. they cut to beautiful visuals of the Golden Gate Bridge and the SF Bay. Nothing in Santa Clara. Parking lots and office buildings down there.

pyrr-noca.bsky.social2

Seriously? Their going to Hammond? I used to work in Hammond, it was not a good time.

criggy.bsky.social2

I'm a lifelong Bears fan but 1000% happily say FUCK DA BEARS and the greedy McCaskeys. Have fun in Indiana

Don’t Follow Me2

I completely agree with your point. City officials are quick to come up with hundreds of millions or even billion dollar agreements to keep sports teams, but can’t find money to improve schools or support universal pre-K or school lunches for all kids.

Dean Y.2

No public tax money should be paid to these corporations.

ManProp2

Boston was better after saying no to the Patriots stadium. I think Providence is still paying that 20+ years later.

beachglitter27.bsky.social2

Several teams have their stadiums somewhere other than the city they are named after. I don't care where the Bears play as long as my tax dollars are not funding a money making enterprise for billionaires.

Oedipal Arrangements 🇵🇸
@6to12elbow.bsky.social

I'm from Chicago and the only thing I give a fuck about regarding the Bears moving to Indiana is I'm glad we the IL taxpayers aren't paying for their stadium. Enjoy footing the bill for another state's team, Indiana, and nice fuckup, Kevin Warren. We pay enough taxes in IL.

Oedipal Arrangements 🇵🇸37

Sorry if you're a sports chud who has to drive to the MAGA hellscape of Indiana (with no snow removal btw because BOOTSTRAPS for commoners but $2+ billion in IN tax dollars for the NFL), where the stadium will be built on a literal toxic waste site, but we aren't subsidizing football in IL. Lmao.

Stamina Hope33

“The Bears would retain all revenue generated by the dome and could eventually purchase it for one dollar once the 40-year bonds are paid off by taxpayers.” Nobody knows how to steal money from working Americans like corporate socialists.

icefragrance.bsky.social21

Are you saying the owners of the Chicago Bears worth 8.8 BILLON and who earn profits of $20 BILLION should have to pay for their own stadium?? It's just so unfair to make the rich pay taxes and pay for their own things, that's what the American taxpayer is for, to subsidize the wealthy!!

wmnew61.bsky.social20

Professional teams should pay for their own stadiums. The NFL is a multi trillion dollar non profit

Curt17

Nice racket pro teams have going. Taxes pay for a stadium that’s too expensive for you to attend.

Cindy Strait15

I'm not from Chicago but I'm happy you aren't footing the bill for a new stadium too. The NFL is a multibillion dollar corporation that pays out to each team about 1/2 billion dollars each year. They can afford to build the stadiums themselves and not make tax payers pay for the stadiums.

mr. dave11

Taxes were never (NEVER) meant to fund stadiums.

Beverly9

If Bears owners were hoping to financed by Chicago taxpayers, then go to Indiana. Screw that. The owner is likely a billionaire so let him figure out his financing. Chicago will find another team for soldier field.

The Fifth Dentist7

Whether Pritzker gets rewarded of punished for this is going to provide us with great insight on the shallowness of voters.

progressivebeat.bsky.social7

I envy you. Our corporate Dems in OR are shoveling a shit ton of tax money at a billionaire who made a fortune on predatory lending while they're cutting our public services. Because our money should obviously fund his for-profit venture instead of our public safety, parks, and water bureau. 🤬

gogojoe.bsky.social5

Why the F is building a stadium not part of a billionaire owner's cost of doing business??

Marvelous Max4

Licence "Chicago" and get your money back.

m41771848.bsky.social3

And the irony of it is that the taxpayers will foot the bill and then they can’t afford tickets to go to the stadium that they pay for

Monica3

Billionaires should build their own stadiums (or buy them), just like us regular folks do with our homes.

momothegooddog.bsky.social2

Kraft tried this gambit by threatening to move the Pats to Hartford. Massachusetts agreed to do some road improvements and he built his own damn stadium. All due respect to Hartford but who the hell would ever move a NFL team there? Fuck da bears

Nonnie Ida2

Hammond. They can have it.

ceegawn.bsky.social2

All of this. And emphasis on the piss and trash in the ground. I’ve witnessed it. So, let ‘em have ‘em.

Carl Mucha2

10 games a year. We'll survive. And we won't give 1.4 billion in tax breaks over the next 5 years. Indiana could afford it as long as they tax meth labs, fireworks, and hand guns. If they taxed Jesus, they'd be solvent.

Dorri2

Pritzer should attempt to attract another franchise to play at Soldier Field. Chicago is a great city that supports their hometown team. Let the Bears attempt to make it in beautiful Hammond Indiana. I’m sure the players will love it.

earth2ceres.bsky.social2

With the combined wealth of all the Oligarchs in this country they could build a new stadium in all 50states and still never want for anything in their entire life.

SparkyLanders2

We have got to find a cure for parasitic billionaires as quickly as possible. They make the fictional Welfare Queen RayGun used to disparage citizens who might need a little help, while getting tons of welfare to the goddamn corporations and rich bitches. Enjoy your eternal dirt nap, Ronnie! 🖕🏼

BREAKING: Chicago Bears say they will proceed with plans for a stadium in Hammond

324d ago
sg1954.bsky.social20

I don’t follow football. But I do follow billionaires. And the comments on the Chicago Bears stadium story are telling you everything you need to know about where we are right now. “Billionaires suck.” “Billionaires aren’t scared enough.” Nobody’s talking about the stadium.

albert4101.bsky.social14

Looks like Green Bay is getting a bunch more fans

jeffedu.bsky.social11

hey Chicago residents: if $$$ is all that the Bears organization cares about, let 'em go. better yet: consider rooting for the Packers, Lions, or Vikings - at least THEY care about their home cities and fans!

The Resistance CO10

Brand new stadium. Record low attendance.

ericswedlund.bsky.social8

Should absolutely have to forfeit the name Chicago if they do that.

Thegrumpybluedot7

The Haslams keep holding Cleveland hostage, too. Fuck these NFL owners. There’s far more to cities than their football teams that suck local resources without giving back. And don’t parrot that old saw about “indirect income” for the city. There’s far less destructive industries that do more.

Cas5

Oh well, guess that's the end of the Chicago Bears. "Hammond Bears" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

J.J.5

Fuck that. Fuck the McCaskey family. Fuck that hilljack governor of Indiana.

talentedripley.bsky.social4

Go to Indiana. It’s grotesque billion dollar franchises want tax cuts. Free stadiums that don’t benefit anyone but the corporation.

Ghcgrain 🇨🇦4

What if a billionaire moved a team and nobody showed up to watch them. One can dream.

Sour Scooter3

RIP bears. Grew up during the Walter Payton era.

Primary Maria Cantwell (respectfully)3

Sweet, let's relocate the colts

Angelo3

So much hostility in reposts toward Hammond/IN from people who've clearly never been Many locals wouldn’t support this, they're already fed up with McDermott carving up habitats. They also don't spend all day barking about Chicago/IL Criticize the Bears' tactics; trashing the locals helps no one
