Scientists warn Trump plan to cut US ocean monitoring will ‘leave world flying blind’

scienceJun 5, 202615506

The Trump administration moved to dismantle the Ocean Observatories Initiative, the U.S. ocean-monitoring network that delivers continuous temperature, current, chemistry and ecosystem data from moorings, seafloor cables and autonomous vehicles. Scientists warn axing the program would severely degrade the accuracy of weather and climate forecasts and interrupt the long-term records used to track ocean warming and acidification. Researchers rely on OOI data for storm modeling, fisheries management and maritime safety, so removing it would hinder operational warnings and scientific studies. That matters because gaps in ocean observations would reduce lead time and confidence for coastal warnings, disrupt climate research and raise risks for shipping, fisheries and coastal communities.
