Trump Administration to Dismantle Ocean Monitoring System

scienceJun 2, 202624650

The Trump administration announced plans to dismantle a $368 million network of about 900 ocean instruments in the Atlantic and Pacific, removing them over roughly 15 months. The National Science Foundation said it will send ships in June to retrieve more than 900 deep sea instruments anchored off Oregon, Washington State, Alaska, North Carolina, and near Greenland and Iceland. The network carried a $48 million annual budget and supplied long-term temperature, circulation, and ecosystem data used for climate research, weather forecasting, and fisheries management. Removing the array will degrade the ability to track ocean warming, marine heatwaves, and changing currents, weakening climate models and operational forecasts.
