Hospitals See Diseases Resurge as Vaccinations Decline
Doctors nationwide report a rise in whooping cough and serious bacterial infections in children, and more adults are refusing tetanus shots, the New York Times reports. Hospitals are treating vaccine-preventable pneumonia and meningitis cases that were once rare, and clinicians say some patients now decline blood transfusions over concerns about donor vaccination status. Public health officials link the surge to falling childhood and adult vaccination rates. The trend increases immediate risks for infants, the elderly and immunocompromised people and could drive higher hospitalizations and public health costs as diseases long kept in check return.
