California governor primary heads to vote with no clear frontrunner
Primary day arrived in California with no clear frontrunner as polls show Xavier Becerra, Steve Hilton and Tom Steyer separated by only a few points. Polling averages put Xavier Becerra at 24.4 percent, Steve Hilton at 22.9 percent and Tom Steyer at 20.1 percent. Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer made last-minute campaign stops in Southern California while Steve Hilton concentrated on consolidating Republican voters. Because no candidate tops roughly 25 percent, the top-two primary could send two Democrats, two Republicans, or a split ticket to November, making turnout and late swings decisive for shaping California policy on housing, climate and the state budget.
