Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC outpaces response as aid arrives

A Bundibugyo strain Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 200 people and continues to spread. Arson attacks on treatment centers and shortages of vaccines and protective gear, compounded by cuts to USAID and WHO funding, have forced clinic closures and hampered care. The European Union and UNICEF have shipped emergency aid and the United States is sending public health officers to Kenya to staff a potential quarantine facility, but WHO warns the response is lagging behind transmission. Continued spread could cross borders and derail antiviral trials and vaccine delivery efforts.
