Notts County beat Salford City 3-0 at Wembley in the League Two play-off final, securing promotion to League One. Jodi Jones scored one of the goals as Notts County completed a decisive victory to claim the final promotion spot. The promotion returns Notts County to the third tier for next season and brings bigger broadcast and matchday revenue opportunities plus tougher competition.
Congratulations to Notts County, the oldest football club in the world, on their 2026 promotion to League One of the Football League, the club's fifteenth promotion season in their history
Oldest professional football club. The oldest club is Sheffield FC.
Notts County were founder members of the Football League in 1888, relegated in 1893, so first won promotion in a 'test match' against Burnley in 1897 after finishing top of the second division. County first played in third tier in 1930 & are back there next season, having been non-league, 2019-23
Great weekend for the world’s oldest clubs getting promoted in the play-offs. My team Blackheath - founded 1858, imaginatively nicknamed ‘Club’ - now up to English rugby’s second tier. Blackheath also a founder member of the league (but that was only in 1987, 129 years after forming)
Really good to have them back at our (The Posh's) level. It's been a while since I visited Meadow Lane. Looking forward* to it already. *The fixture will be while I'm on holiday now I've gone public.
