Bungie signals end for Destiny 2 with 'Per Audacia ad astra' message
Bungie announced with the Latin line "Per Audacia ad astra" that Destiny 2 will wind down after nearly 12 years and thanked players for their support. The studio said it will keep live servers running while concluding active development and ending major new content for the game. The move closes one of the longest-running live-service shooters and lets Bungie reallocate resources to future projects, while many players mark the finale as the end of a defining shared-world era.
NEW: Bungie is planning a significant layoff following the end of Destiny 2's development. Destiny 3 is NOT in active production. Some Bungie staff are pitching and prototyping new ideas including Destiny games, but none are yet greenlit. Story: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
A lot of people have wondered why Bungie didn't immediately start working on Destiny 3 after The Final Shape two years ago. The answer (as it usually is) is how much money it would take
Say what you will about Destiny but there's so much talent there for making killer gameplay and worlds. They've already thrown away so much talent and it sucks it's going to get even worse.
I don't even follow how they're still around. Other companies have lost significantly less money and shut down. Marathon isn't likely to save them.
Marathon going all in on such a niche subgenre was such a bad gamble. I'd gladly buy that game if it had traditional FPS modes
Not the Schreierbomb I was hoping for, but the one I was expecting
Oh, so it's OVER over... RIP Bungie, the devs worked hard to make a game for the community, yet it was affected from higher up decisions that was out of their hands.
Destiny 3 should have started production the day Final Shape shipped. Pete Parsons and his leadership team’s incompetency truly had no bounds. As a day one Destiny player, I will forever resent them.
damn, Bungie won't survive 2026 it seems
Fuck Pete Parsons, fuck upper management. D3 should've been in dev after Final Shape. Such wasted potential.
Never thought id see the day 343 Industries (now Halo Studios) would outlast Bungie.
It's a shame, because Marathon is one of the most miserable experiences I've ever had the misfortune of playing and THAT'S the basket Bungie is deciding to put all of their eggs in I think Bungie's days are officially numbered, and that isn't something I say lightly.
The state of marathon 2026 discourse is about to get ten times more toxic which is something I never would've thought possible
The death of video game consoles will be the result of both Sony and Microsoft being bad at making decisions.
This is both horrific and somehow not surprising. Some real sad shit.
Make a FPS game with an epic campaign. Like in the gold Halo days.
I wish they never stopped with Halo. Both things went bad after that breakup.
Just one shitty news message after another. It's bleak how the game (and the devs!) that kept the studio relevant for a decade get treated. Just because Management kept chasing that infinity money dream in the form of Live Service Trends like Extraction or Hero Shooters.
feels like its literal managment upset they wont get their golden paracuits because of marathon not hiting goals so they would rather kill destiny here and now while fiering devs for what little extra cash they can steal from the people keeping everythign afloat all these years -.-
Yea that's about the Jason update that I think we all knew was coming.
The decision to allegedly make Marathon from some "Dark Age of Camelot" inspired game to an extraction shooter, and work on Project Payback + Gummy Bears over a D3 or D1 PC port just doomed this studio.
Marathon should've been developed as their next Halo-like IP, with a fleshed out campaign (could have been a new trilogy), along with multiplayer (the extraction shooter we got could have been a single mode that would provided opportunities to earn weapons for use in other MP modes). Such a waste.
How much money it would’ve taken is BULLSHIT. They were ROLLING in coin after Sony came in. Greed and mismanagement killed Destiny and to say anything else is wildly disingenuous.
Wow, so Destiny is just dead then. It’s amazing in the same year Overwatch successfully reboots Bungie just throws in the towel. I can’t believe Sony spent an entire generation trying to grow a GaaS from scratch when they had a perfectly fine one right in front of them they made no attempt to save.
I can hear Tom Christie’s Skeletor already… “HE-MAN! HE-MAN-“
After their significant loss from Marathon I’m shocked they’re still open.
They're done for. I wish they hadn't come in and screwed up Sony's plans for the last of us online. Sony should never have bought them.
So basically Sony is now where studios go to die. I remember when that was Xbox's thing. I guess its on brand, since Sony basically adopts other's ideas and perfect them. Now Sony wants to perfect failing strategies.
Because they thought they didn't have to make a third one. Because they didn't want to. They are morons. I have been a loyal Bungie fan for almost 20 years but now I think Sony should just dismantle what's left of it. And find a way to get rid of Jones and Parsons without paying them anything.
It feels like those who were passionate about making creative choices moved on to marathon, destiny has kind of felt like a shambling corpse since marathon's been in development. I don't wish layoffs on anyone but I do wonder if they should just stick to one game for now
well this is fucking bleak “it’s costly because the employees are well paid and happy with a lot of institutional knowledge”
yeah they're beyond screwed. I smell another impairment coming.
Devastated My fave franchise gone
I applied for a job at bungie, didn't get it, but got some feedback. applied again, but by then, all of the people I had encountered had been laid off and I got a rejection with no human contact at the application stage. wild, but unsurprising that the layoffs ain't done
Need more Destiny. There is no other game like it.
D2 ending active development because of Marathon and the start of D3? Makes logical sense. D3 not even in the cards AT FUCKING ALL is terrifying, Marathon will now be massively changed to attract a wider audience and dozens if not hundreds of talented devs are going to lose their jobs...
Bummer as a Destiny 2 fan, exciting as a Marathon fan, just for the feeble hope that a game I love will get the support it deserves. Full Bungie blog here: t.co/1PmLuyR3aD
I LOVED that game. I have a Ghost tattoo, the Nerf Gjallerhorn, CEs, a bunch of the seal pins etc, but I stopped playing when I completed the Final Shape campaign. It’s been sad to watch the downhill slope the game’s been on and this really sucks for the community still playing.
Can they at least turn the old campaigns back on before they leave it? I paid $60 for the game and can't even play the launch content
on one hand this sucks and might legit be the end of bungie which is really sad. on the other hand it's kind of insane that the one major thing i know about destiny 2 is "they quadrupled down on the same temporary content model that was infamously bad in the mmo I play"
sucks because a proper shooter mmo is a really neat idea but then the main thing i know about it is "what if the entire game was living world season one"
wait wait why's bungie ending, wtf they just released my favorite shooter!!!
Especially when games like Final Fantasy XIV have thrived over the idea that "there's years of stuff in here for you" instead of just deleting old stuff. Like there's a huge, proven industry model showing that people will even pay a monthly sub for access to all the content. Wild.
