Alan set today's Bird Of The Day, part of the weekly ECK event, to theme Grassland with alternate tag red. Contributors posted species ranging from a Glossy Ibis in breeding plumage from India to a Male Red-rumped Parrot and Crimson Rosella in the Australian Capital Territory and a California Towhee in California, USA. Alan asked participants to like and repost the previous three entries to help others' photos gain visibility. The Grassland focus highlights habitat-linked species and breeding colors while giving photographers a simple, coordinated way to showcase global bird photography.

A close-up macro photograph captures a bumblebee poised delicately on the centre of a vivid purple daisy-like flower. The bee fills much of the frame and is shown side-on, creating a strong sense of intimacy and scale. Its body is densely furred, with rich bands of golden yellow and black across the thorax and abdomen, ending in a soft warm-orange tail that glows against the cooler tones around it. Fine individual hairs catch the light, giving the insect a velvety texture.

The bee appears momentarily suspended between stillness and movement, with front legs lightly gripping the flower while the body is lifted as though preparing to move to the next bloom. One curved antenna arcs forward into the space ahead, and the glossy dark eye reflects a pinpoint of light. The wings sit mostly hidden against the body, allowing the texture and colour of the bee itself to dominate the scene.

Beneath it, the flower’s petals radiate outward in saturated violet and magenta tones, with subtle gradients and faint texture visible across their surface. The dark central disc is densely packed with tiny clustered florets that create contrast against the luminous petals. Surrounding blooms dissolve into a dreamy blur in the background, creating layers of soft purple shapes and shallow depth of field that isolate the bee as the clear subject.

The overall effect is immersive and almost painterly: a tiny pollinator rendered in crisp detail against a sea of blurred violet, capturing the fleeting pause of a bee at work among summer flowers.

Photograph taken of a stork-like bird on the C18th Chinoiserie, hand blocked, wallpaper in the Queen of Scots Room at Chatsworth House. It has long green legs, deep brown patterned wings, a pink-mushroom coloured body and a long green beak. It is looking over its shoulder at something out of frame. There are mountains and snow topped trees behind it. Snow also at its feet. No idea on the actual bird, so will leave that to the bird experts on here!

Love Chinoiserie wallpaper and the birds on this one made me laugh. They'd been placed in positions as if they were interacting with each other - some looking confused, others naffed off, some oblivious. Makes me think that the artists had laughed at birds in their localities and added that humour to their work, all those years ago.

The wallpaper was made about 1799 in Guangzhou, China, and was made for export. The wallpaper has been restored by experts as it had suffered from water damage and general ageing. More info about the conservation work can be found in the press release section of Chatsworth's website:

A handsome buffy brown bird with a yellow breast is sitting in the middle of a hay meadow. This is a female Bobolink, photographed in late May at Heaven Hill near Lake Placid in upstate New York. Female Bobolinks arrive on this meadow in mid to late May, a week or so after the males.
