World Bee Day, tributes and pollinator photos
Photographers, artists and gardeners marked World Bee Day with macro photos, artwork and garden tips, including a Trout Lily photo from early April showing a very small bee. LIPID MAPS published an explainer called "Buzzing About Lipids" outlining biochemical connections between bees and lipids. Blogger Wayne Campbell framed the year’s theme as "a partnership that sustains US all" to emphasize pollinators' importance for people and the planet. Posts urged planting early-bloomers and protecting local pollinators to help secure food production and biodiversity.
I missed World Bee Day yesterday. So, here's a late offering. A native (to Australia) blue-banded bee.
I had no idea it was. Not nearly as nice as yours, but my photo has some similarity in colours (of a regulation honeybee, I think). By the Brisbane River, about 17 years ago (😱):
Blue-bummed Beebs! In my childhood, wa-a-ay before the interwebs, I saw one at home in Brisbane, buzzing near Mum's loquat tree. I didn't know such things existed! I had no facility to find out (from the domestic setting of the suburbs) - I will admit, just seeing such a thing befuddled me. 😕
Man we have some cool insects over here
BlueSky Trending shows Bezos as # 1 and World Bee Day as # 4. Whatever we can collectively do to replace bees over bezos, you know that you need to do. #WorldBeeDay
ugh. World Bee Day has dropped to # 5 - #WorldBeeDay #NativeBees
Here's a few of my favorite bee shots I've taken!🐝 #WorldBeeDay
Is that bee on a mariposa lily? Looking like leichlin’s or bruneaunsis?
Bees honestly deserve all the attention today 🐝🌼 Tiny creatures with a massive impact on our planet and food systems. Happy #WorldBeeDay!
It's World Bee Day! 🐝 This little Mason bee (genus Osmia) demonstrates exceptional strength & fortitude in removing a nail from a brick wall. Mason bees are solitary: the females make nests from mud or, in this case, masonry walls. So, our narrator should say: "good lass." (📷: MrDowner1306, YT)
Male mason bees, in fact, may only live a few days, just long enough to mate, while the females stick around to create a home for the offspring. This species produces neither wax nor honey. They lay a single egg on a "bee loaf" made of pollen & nectar kneaded into a lump.
Do you know that this was staged? The guy slotted it into an existing nest hole. Still faurly impressive strength and problem solving abilities though.
