EPA proposes repealing Biden‑era limits on 'forever chemicals' in water

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed repealing the Biden administration's April 2024 national drinking-water limits that set maximum contaminant levels for four PFAS "forever chemicals," including PFOA and PFOS. The draft would extend compliance deadlines and let water utilities seek multi-year extensions, potentially leaving communities exposed to PFAS for up to two additional years. At the same time, the agency announced $44.3 million in grants for small or disadvantaged communities to support monitoring and treatment upgrades. PFAS have been linked to cancer, immune dysfunction, and developmental harm, so weakening these rules could slow cleanup and increase long-term health risks for towns and rural water systems.
