WHO 'deeply concerned' as Ebola outbreak rises in DRC and Uganda
At least 131 people have died and about 500 suspected cases are reported in a Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak spreading across eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and into Uganda. The World Health Organization said it is deeply concerned about the outbreak's rapid speed and scale as health teams race to test and sequence samples and deliver treatments; an American doctor has tested positive. The outbreak is centered in volatile, high-traffic mining and humanitarian zones such as Ituri province, complicating containment and increasing urgent funding and response needs to prevent wider spread.
⚠️ This outbreak deserves a higher level of attention than the Hanta virus but it won't get it. Those affected now are poor communities living in remote parts of Africa. There is a direct correlation between the shutdown of USAID and the fact that the latest outbreak wasn't announced until Friday.
The CDC is holding a media call on the Ebola outbreak today. On a Sunday. That's unusual.
These hemorrhagic fevers will not always remain limited to remote locations in Africa. We are often not informed in the West about these outbreaks. International travel has the potential to spread these anywhere on the planet. They're not an "over there" problem.
