Peter Gabriel's 'So' turns 40
Peter Gabriel's fifth studio album So turns 40 today, marking its May 19, 1986 release. The record produced major hits including "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time," features the duet "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush, and contains atmospheric tracks such as "Mercy Street" and "In Your Eyes." So mixed art-pop, worldbeat rhythms, and inventive production, with the stop-motion "Sledgehammer" video becoming one of the decade's defining visuals. The album's commercial and artistic breakthrough moved Gabriel into mainstream prominence and its songs remain influential staples on playlists and cover sets four decades later.
Peter Gabriel released his fifth studio album “So” on this day in 1986. It would become his best-selling solo album. Are you a fan of this album? What are your favourite tracks? #PeterGabriel
I always liked “Red Rain” and “In Your Eyes” as well as his duet with Kate Bush, “Don’t Give Up.” 💙🎶
Love this album and saw the tour Don’t Give Up is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Mercy Street is incredible imo. Red Rain This is the Picture All the singles
It’s his big commercial album, but it’s a good commercial album. ‘Melt’ is still my favourite.
"Sledgehammer," "In Your Eyes," and "Don’t Give Up are favorites." But "Red Rain" is my overall pick. The atmosphere on that track is unreal. The drums sound huge, and the sync textures feel like a storm moving in. Gabriel made art rock feel massive and deeply human at the same time.
Music fans can always find something of interest with Gabriel. This is a brilliant album . Groudbreaking. A sledgehammer if you will.
Best Gabriel album by far…My favorite tracks: “Big Time” “Don’t Give Up” (with Kate Bush) “Mercy Street” “In Your Eyes” “Sledgehammer” youtu.be/VjEq-r2agqc?...
Bang bang Peter's sledgehammer came down upon my head...🎶🎵 #Sledgehammer
Red Rain and In Your Eyes are great. I love Gabriel’s music, but prefer Us and III to So.
So captures that moment in time perfectly for me. Just hearing In Your Eyes takes me back instantly.
My favorite tracks from the album: Red Rain Sledgehammer Don't Give Up In Your Eyes Big Time
It was an album of its time. Slick production, unchallenging songs, nothing much of enduring interest for non-Gabriel fans.
Very much. I have a copy of the CD.
This is a fantastic album. Smooth. Polished. but I lean towards the first 4
40 years, wow. Don't Give Up In Your Eyes Sledgehammer Big Time
