Judge bars ICE from making immigration arrests at New York courts

A federal judge largely barred U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from detaining or arresting people at immigration courts in New York City. The order prevents ICE from conducting arrests inside or on the grounds of New York immigration courts, reversing a practice of detaining migrants at federal courthouses. Amy Belsher, director of immigrants' rights litigation at the New York Civil Liberties Union, called the ruling "hugely important," saying "People can now go to immigration court with the understanding that they won't be arrested there." The decision matters because it reduces the risk that migrants will skip hearings for fear of courthouse arrest and helps protect access to due process in immigration proceedings.
