Canada confirmed its first domestic case of the Andes hantavirus in a traveler linked to the MV Hondius cruise outbreak. Health officials said the positive patient is one of four Canadians WHO returned from the MV Hondius, an outbreak that has killed three passengers. The Andes hantavirus can spread between people through body fluids and causes fever, body aches, gastrointestinal symptoms and severe respiratory illness with mortality rates approaching 50% in some American outbreaks. Authorities are emphasizing screening and contact tracing and warning that close-quarters travel like cruise ships increases transmission risk.
