Sam Altman testifies in OpenAI lawsuit

techMay 12, 202617355

Sam Altman took the stand in Elon Musk's lawsuit to defend OpenAI's shift to a for-profit model and to reject Musk's claim that the company betrayed its founding mission. Altman told the court Musk's 2018 departure was a "morale boost" for some researchers and said Musk's management style worked for factories but not for an AI research lab. Musk's lawyers pressed Altman about contradictions and about testimony from Ilya Sutskever, Mira Murati, Tasha McCauley, Elon Musk, and Dario Amodei accusing him of lying, while Republicans have intensified scrutiny of Altman's personal investments. The testimony could determine whether the court finds OpenAI breached its nonprofit commitments and shape future governance and investor scrutiny of major AI firms.
