PCOS renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS)
PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is now PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome). The name change follows a multiyear process stemming from a recognition that ovarian cysts aren't the primary aspect of the condition, which affects multiple body systems, and many patients don't have them.
I would love to talk to people affected by this for follow-up coverage. If you have PMOS and struggled to get a diagnosis because you didn't have cysts, or you haven't been able to get effective treatment, or doctors haven't taken you seriously... maggie.astor@nytimes.com if you're open to talking.
at first glance I read 'apocalyptic ovary syndrome' and was like: ah yeah, people will probably pay more attention to that.
As someone who has polycystic ovaries, I appreciate this because it confused tf out of me how I have very polycystic ovaries and yet not PCOS
Was just talking about this with my wife who has long suspected a diagnosis would be appropriate for her and indeed, the roadblock has been that the former name has led medical pros to assume it wouldn't be right because she doesn't have a history of cysts.
PCOS is being renamed to PMOS. (Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) The change comes from experts that say the old name was misleading, stating that it inaccurately suggested ovarian cysts as a defining feature.
Piss Me Off Syndrome hell yeah easier to explain
This sounds like a much-needed clarification! The old name was definitely confusing. 🤔
I think it's a good distinction! I kept having to tell people I had been diagnosed with "PCO" without the "S" haha XD that was the first time i ever heard that cysts don't necessarily mean you have pcos! (now pmos)
Renaming it to PMOS is progress, but if we don't address the rs5522 switch, we’re still just chasing symptoms. 🧬This "polyendocrine" mess is driven by cortisol steal and a broken metabolic receptor. Let's stop renaming the fallout and start fixing the root cause.
