After a years-long global consultation of clinicians and patient advocates, an international panel formally replaced the name polycystic ovary syndrome with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, abbreviated PMOS. The new name is intended to correct the misconception that the condition only causes ovarian cysts and to highlight its endocrine and metabolic roots and lifelong impacts on fertility, cardiometabolic health and mental wellbeing. Health groups estimate the condition affects about 170 million women worldwide and links to higher risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression. Experts say adopting PMOS should broaden diagnosis and prompt integrated endocrine, metabolic, reproductive and mental health care, potentially improving early detection and treatment.
