EU trade deal could force UK to limit glyphosate use

newsMay 6, 2026151,583

A proposed EU trade framework being negotiated could force the UK to restrict or ban glyphosate use on cereal and pulse crops, particularly the practice of spraying it as a preharvest dessicant. Glyphosate is widely used to dry crops before harvest so combines can work faster and yields are easier to manage, and campaign groups including the Soil Association, Nature Friendly Farming Network, Greenpeace and the Wildlife Trusts are calling for an end to that practice. The World Health Organization classifies glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans," and researchers link glyphosate-based herbicides to genetic damage, oxidative stress and hormonal disruption, meaning any trade rule limiting glyphosate would reshape UK farming practices and import standards.

my homeplace was magical, fairly inaccessble, pristine and unchanged by human hands til priveleged seasonal property owners began using roundup on thistles, which dont even grow here unless soil is artificially disturbed. amphibians gone. Insect/bird/plant diversity halved.

Won't that go against the spirit of Brexit? I thought the Brits had liberated themselves from Europe?

Meanwhile in the United States, it's getting a green light by the goons in charge.

Millie, or Mills if we’re friends3

And this, friends, is why the US is trying to break up the EU. NATO isn’t the target; the EU has always been what Trump and the oligarchs want to kill

Also RoundUp was developed by the military for killing weeds around missile silos, not dandelions and morning glories. Stupid yuppies who want a lawn that looks like AstroTurf. I don't have a lawn. I have a yard.
