Rep. Adam Smith cut off Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at a congressional hearing Wednesday morning, interjecting "Whoa, whoa, whoa" as he demanded clearer answers. Smith pressed Hegseth on conflicting statements: two months ago Hegseth warned of an immediate Iranian nuclear threat, yet in testimony told lawmakers the United States had "totally obliterated" Iran's nuclear capabilities. Smith also challenged whether the Pentagon deserves big budget increases given unresolved audit gaps and whether Hegseth's inconsistent claims could be used to justify escalation with Iran.
Pete Hegseth was relieved of his duties in the National Guard and ultimately stopped serving due to security concerns. Donald Trump then appointed him to run the entire military.
