Supreme Court rules Louisiana House map an unconstitutional racial gerrymander

newsApr 29, 2026212,894

The Supreme Court ruled that Louisiana's congressional map is an unconstitutional racial gerrymander and ordered the map redrawn. The justices left Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act on the books but narrowed how courts can apply it to challenge maps that dilute minority voting strength. Justice Elena Kagan dissented, saying, "I dissent because the Court's decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity." The decision reshapes the legal standard for redistricting challenges and will reduce avenues for Black and other minority voters to secure representation in future maps.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana map that fairly represents Black voters, gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. This devastating attack from the Court majority destroys protections for voters of color across the country.

Boggles the mind that redistricting is fine as long as it's giving preference or advantage to a political party, but not when it's being used to give an equal voice to constituents. Shouldn't individual voters' voice matter more than the party?

Racism prevails by a vote of 6-3

Let me get this straight, SCOTUS rules against districts that benefit minorities but still allows gerrymandering for GOP to keep others "white"?

Supreme Court Justice Crowe was heard yelling at Justice Jackson, “Stop calling me Jim Crowe… I can’t help it that my parents named me James. It’s James Crowe, god damn it! Not Jim Crowe!” Jackson was heard saying, “suit yourself Jim, I mean James.”

As usual with this Court, whichever decision hurts the greatest number of people to the greatest extent wins, especially if the people hurt are Black, Brown, trans, gay/lesbian, or, of course, women. John Taney Roberts is degrading the Court, the Constitution, and American values.

One third of the voters in Louisiana are Black. Looks like they are sadly unrepresented. cbwrong.blogspot.com/2026/04/viol...

I don’t think people realize how bad this will disenfranchise under represented people in the voting process. This decision is devastating

Our country is no longer a Democracy.

The Captain3

Uncap the house. That fixes gerrymandering at the source. 1000 seats in the House of Representatives removes all gerrymanders and fixes minority representation.

This court a joke and we need to take control on Congress and pack the court.

Welcome to the party pal!2

NEW: The Supreme Court just gutted the Voting Rights Act, enabling the GOP to erase countless districts drawn to protect voters of color at the congressional, state, & local levels. We detailed each Dem VRA congressional seat that the GOP could target by 2028: www.the-downballot.com/p/with-the-v...

U.S. state map showing states in red where Republicans could eliminate Voting Rights Act-protected congressional districts that are predominantly Black or Latino and currently held by Democrats.

By 2028, Republicans could target VRA seats in:
Alabama: 2
Florida: 1
Georgia: 2
Louisiana: 2
Mississippi: 1
South Carolina: 1
Tennessee: 1
Texas: 2 (Texas Republicans could further weaken another 4 VRA seats held by Democrats that they already targeted in 2026 and 2 seats that Republicans currently hold)
Total: 12
