Beijing Auto Show spotlights sub‑10‑minute EV charging tech

techApr 28, 2026274,367

At the Beijing Auto Show, Chinese EV and battery makers unveiled fast-charging systems and new battery packs promising full EV charges in under 10 minutes. Xpeng introduced the GX, its largest six-seat electric SUV, and demonstrated on-board AI driving and cabin features. Competition in China has pushed new-car prices so low that the average U.S. car price could buy five new Chinese EVs. Those cheaper prices combined with sub-10-minute charging and larger models can remove range and cost barriers and accelerate wider EV adoption and longer-distance electric travel.

Can anyone guess which country will dominate the global auto industry going forward?

So we spend billions of tax payer dollars propping up the auto industry, and in return we get to drive worse cars that are oversized, ugly and dirty.

k.gordon50

Every American car manufacturer deserves to go out of business. Instead of innovating, they decided to retain the status quo and suck up to this admin.

Jonathan34

You can price cars affordably when you aren't only concerned about billion dollar c-suite packages.

Thomas29

The only two countries Trump is making great right now are Russia and China.

Drew Montagna24

China taking full advantage of Trump wrecking the US economy. Everything Trump does is for two reasons; stay out of prison and amass as much wealth (by fleecing the American taxpayer) as possible.

Socrates Agrees19

Good. The US deserves every reckoning it gets. I hate it here.

Georgia, running in the cold13

Add in the fact that you can get a solar charging sun roof outside the US (looking at you, Ioniq 5)

storgeta.bsky.social12

And they’re so cute and cheerful. Maybe we’d be happier if our streets looked like Busytown instead of hosting our exhaust-emitting, dismal white, gray, and black fleet.

urnotkelly.bsky.social9

China will be THE new super power in the world as the US is left far behind. They are dominating in the EV, solar, wind, chip production etc etc. they have been working for years on moving forward while the US has held onto some fantasy of the “good ole days” that were never that good.

Sam Furgiuele9

Hopefully, they’ll crush Tesla and end the reign of terror of Elon Musk.

EllisonX6

the dinosaurs at Ford & GM did the classic wrong move, protectionism over innovation. Instead of taking up the challenges of the future, meeting them head on as the Chinese are doing, Ford & GM insist on flogging a horse even they know is dead.

bluebotany.bsky.social6

The car dealership will be more than happy to sell you it a twice the price. Fuck that. Factory direct BABY!

WeFUCT!5

In the US, it started with reagan taking the solar panels off the White House right after an oil crisis. That was the sign, we all saw it, no one's done anything about it. The last 50 years is the result. The lack of imagination in the US auto industry is mind-boggling since it's inception.

myspirit4

Restricting Chinese electric vehicles with crazy tariffs and regulation hurdles has not boosted failing domestic production of EVs so we keep burning oil, and fighting stupidly evil wars over oil, when we know what we are doing to the planet is evil.

dpbsmith.bsky.social4

The US auto industry was almost wiped out by Japanese competition in the 1980s, but were able to adapt--partially. But this looks like a death blow to me.

jimbpa.bsky.social4

I look around in the US and I wonder where are all the small fuel efficient cars? Shouldn’t we be moving in a direction that’s better for the planet? Apparently not while the big profits are in huge gas hogging SUVs and trucks. Weren’t we a nation of innovators at one point?

Apple4

The country the United States keeps handing all the technology over to?

Boycott big oil! Buy EV’s only!

Fermin's Swedish Paradox3

American Exceptionalism! Our cars are 5x better!

The Gaul of Kanata3

but don't forget that the Chinese auto industry is heavily subsidized.... this isn't sustainable and doesn't reflect the true production costs

Anthony Calvello2

Disaster for every other car company worldwide. High Tariffs will be imposed to keep the Chinese cars out of the U.S. .

Green Grandma 💙2

This year Canada plans to open 20 dealerships starting in Toronto allowing 49,000 cars arriving annually.

impeach-t.bsky.social2

It’ll be funny to see the Chinese EV is coming into Canada and the owners traveling to the United States with them.

David Williams2

Imagine how much less expensive US made goods would be if, even paying employees better wages, CEOs didn't walk off with millions per year and zero could ever be spent buying elections and politicians.

Susan NO DMs2

And after taking bribes from US makers rump will ban imports.

Andrea Basso
@a4xrbj1.bsky.social

I just spent two days at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show (Auto China 2026), and I need to tell you something: the future of the auto industry is electric and Chinese. I’m not being dramatic. Just realistic. /1

Andrea Basso110

/2 In a single hall at the show, there were more EV models on display than there are available ones in the entire United States. There are 17 halls at this show. Seventeen. And they all have more EVs than the US market.

Walt48

Exactly! The US is going backwards just so a few rich guys make money from oil.

FP :-|33

meanwhile back in good old exceptional usa, we're soon to have coal burning cars 💨

Mysterious Noodle26

Yep, for the foreseeable future. I see people riding electric cargo bikes as a replacement for cars as people quit gas and cannot afford a new car.

Henry LaCaville24

American car companies are ready to compete!

Biaisa Weda21

Recently had a conversation with a GM executive and he said he was terrified. He wants Trump to block all imports of Chinese electric vehicles. I guess they no longer like capitalism. Republicans, this administration, and US auto makers (regardless of whether they want to admit it) are to blame.

evPhoto19

It's amazing what a country can accomplish if it doesn't spend $1,000,000,000,000 a year on war. (That's a whole lot of zeroes). 🫥

Tomasz Oryński13

Unfortunately I will not read your article. Why? Because your cookie popup only gives me two options: - agree to all - scroll a big-ass-long list and manually switch them off one by one and then save my choices. I am boycotting sides that don't give "deny all" as one of default options.

Alan Sochan12

Can't wait to buy one of these. They will be available in Canada.

The North American auto makers have been protecting the old ways for so long they’ve fallen behind.

Clyde McKinley9

If you don't adapt to the future you end up left in the past. Putting solar panels on your house and getting free energy to charge your EV and never having to pay for gas is woke...

Sokyle2 🇺🇸 🇰🇷 🇫🇷 🇺🇦 🇹🇭 🇹🇼 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️7

And China already owns the future - it dominates in EVs, solar panels, wind turbines All thanks to the Republicans who GAVE CHINA these markets with their regressive, anti-renewable, pro-fossil fuel policies 🤬

Doug van den Ham6

Maybe the US industry could save itself with a taller, more menacing looking truck?

Andy6

Spent a fortnight in China this February. Got Didi taxis everywhere as they were inexpensive. Most drivers have brand new EVs - BYD notably. Large city of 7m people with good air quality and lower traffic noise. Saw 1000s of wind turbines on train journeys as well.

lovemaddow.bsky.social6

trump screwed the US once again… thanks magats

Jackson McBride6

The US, primarily due to the ass-backwards policies of the Republican Party, is always ten steps behind. Japan took advantage of us in the ate '70s and '80s and it took the US auto industry a decade to try and catch up. Here we are again.

J. Barry6

China is dominating the EV market, and Ford's CEO came back from Australia in full panic mode after getting behind the wheel of some Chinese EVs. He found that they are better cars with lower prices. Now Ford is doing everything in its power to keep them out of the U.S. market.

The Barbegazi5

And we have an orange dinosaur bombing Iran and manipulating oil prices like its 1973. I hate it here.

Henry LaCaville4

Canada is getting 49,000 Chinese electric cars from 3 companies at the end of this year. 🇨🇦

robertjeff57-58.bsky.social4

They are fantastic Hear they are not using lithium in the battery any more Less than ten minutes to charge

Clive Warner4

Unsurprising. Years ago I went to the US to give a talk to cement industry execs. I finished and the audience just sat there with weird faces. Finally I got one question: "Is anyone using this cement plant technology?" They were many years behind.

well given how much Chinese engineers love to cut corners i'm not sure totalitarian China is who we should be relying on. I've seen to many issues BYD and Xaomi cars in China to trust them.

Snarkydoodle - #IAmAntifa🐸3

I've already investigated buying one from Canada. We'll need more time. AND a different type of administration.

Christopher Boffoli3

I'm guessing you didn't see the privacy cloaks that they commonly put on electric cars when they have runaway fires on the streets of China. The cloaks are meant to obscure the brands to save face. They'll also chisel off the logos as fast as they can. According to the CCP, China IS the future.

J. Michael Bossert3

Anyone buying a gas car now is . . . TOO STUPID for words.

everybodybcool.bsky.social3

honestly most Americans have no idea about the state of Chinese EVs

💯 they got that market while everyone else was sleeping Or in USA s case blocking for oil and also one billionaire buddy

Never forget it didn’t have to be that way. Rich people protecting their monopoly killed innovation, it’s always this way.

Not saying I am right, but I don't see any connection between robots & cars, hate touch screens in cars & really don't care about any of the bling electronics going into cars. azmichael1976.bsky.social2

hmmm, like the 1970's, Toyota fundamentally changed the U.S. auto industry in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when its reliability‑focused manufacturing system and fuel‑efficient cars forced Detroit to overhaul how it built vehicles. We can keep announcing. Drill, baby Drill will not help America!

Natick42

There will be an eventual consolidation in the Chinese market; some of the companies are racing to the bottom on viability. That said, Beijing expects the smartest and most competitive companies to survive. Americans - and Europeans to some extent - are living in la la land.
