NYC opens Office of Deed Theft Prevention

newsApr 24, 20268206

Mayor Zohran Mamdani established New York City’s first Mayor’s Office of Deed Theft Prevention and appointed attorney Peter White as director. The office will investigate and crack down on schemes that fraudulently transfer ownership of homeowners’ properties, a response prompted after Councilmember Chi Ossé was arrested while protesting a Bed-Stuy eviction. The office will detect scams, protect vulnerable homeowners and work to recover stolen property. This matters because deed theft often strips elderly or low-income owners of homes and the city now has a centralized enforcement unit to pursue perpetrators.
