Democrats flip dozens of U.S. House seats, retake the House majority

Democrats picked up roughly 40 U.S. House seats in the 2026 midterm elections and reclaimed control of the House, according to AP live counts. Decision Desk HQ projected Democrat Kristina Knickerbocker defeated longtime Rep. Mike Turner to flip Ohio’s 10th District, one of the pickups contributing to the shift. The Associated Press notes all 435 congressional districts vote every two years and that Republicans went into 2026 with a narrow 219-member caucus, only one seat above the majority threshold. AP analysts said Democrats needed to win just three more seats than they did in 2024 to flip the chamber and pointed to 16 percent of incumbents not running again as opening multiple competitive races. Reporters and analysts also flagged that several districts that voted for Donald Trump in 2024 but are represented by Democrats remained especially competitive. Coverage tying the results together argues Republican redistricting efforts backfired in some places, producing vulnerable maps that helped Democratic gains. With Democrats now holding the House majority, they will control the floor agenda and committee chairmanships in the next Congress.
